Ryan Matthews is the cool English literature teacher at West Beverly Hills High whose unorthodox teaching style puts him at odds with his fellow teachers and sometimes drives him too close to his students. He's also the head coach of the school's prestigious lacrosse team, which puts him directly in the firing line when Ethan and Dixon vie for top spot on the team.
The kids like him because he's young and cool, while the parents appreciate the success of his teaching approach. But he's not afraid to speak his minds, which puts him into conflict with everyone around him. He gets close to the school's guidance councilor Kelly Taylor, as well as Kimberly, the new undercover cop posing as a student.
