Welcome to this week’s blog from the Hollyoaks music department.

This week’s Hollyoaks musical highlights:

‘Parallel Spaces’ by Picture Book –

We suggested the song to the director as lyrically it tied in well to the opening scenes of the episode and it’s a great, emotive track. We were pleased to have another opportunity to give an exciting emerging band a bit of exposure!

We’ve had a couple of enquiries about the band/track. You can find out about them here:

http://www.myspace.com/picturebookofficial

‘Symphony No.41 in C Major (Jupiter)’ by Mozart –

The opening scene was scripted as Darren conducting an orchestra as a metaphor for his controlling of the Ashworths. The director asked us for something with big orchestral hits and some quick peaks and troughs. He liked this suggestion and it made for a fun intro. It was a refreshing change to have some classical music over the menu scenes as well!

‘No Kind Words’ by The Maccabees –

We’ve been wanting to use this track since we heard it on last years excellent and underrated ‘Wall of Arms’ album so it was great to finally get it on the show.  It has a powerful dark feel and some impressive hip-hop style drumming.

British rapper Roots Manuva obviously thought so too as he recently collaborated with the band on a good remix of the track which is definitely worth checking out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCvJAyn_w68

‘Intro’ by The XX –

We use the XX a lot on the ‘Oaks and you may have noticed this track popping up all over trailers on the BBC as well. The song is from their equally brooding and joyful self-titled debut album which is definitely worth a purchase.

On our stereo this week:

‘Heart of a Wrestler’ (Demo) by Heartships -

http://www.myspace.com/heartships

A brand new band from Leeds with massive potential, who have just put two recently-recorded demos on their Myspace page. ‘Heart of Wrestler’ combines an inspiring, thoughtful lyric with some explosive and original musical ideas and some brilliant chanted group vocals. The whole track makes you feel like you’re on some sort of magical musical pirate ship.

Watch out for them!

‘Kiara’ by Bonobo -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gdbHpd6vt4

Stand out track from Simon Green’s latest long-player. A deep bass line combines with a crisp beat and some lovely chopped vocal samples to create a mini-masterpiece of the genre.

Discover all the tracks played in Hollyoaks this week by checking out the music playlist.

In next week’s Hollyoaks watch out for tracks by Ellie Goulding, Plan B and Vampire Weekend.

Until then!

Pictured above are Suzanne Ashworth and her son Rhys. Rhys ain't too happy with his mother dearest. "Why?" you may ask. Well, Suzie's been flirting with Darren Osborne!

Yep, out of all the hunka-hunkas in Hollyoaks village, Suzie's been batting her come hither eyes at Rhys' arch-enemy, Darren.

Do you think Suzanne should get rid of Neville and be with the younger man? Or should she stick with the Nev-meister and his miserly ways? Perhaps Neville should "do a Barnesy" and get with a younger lady?

He may have filmed his last scenes last week, but, rest assured, the legacy of Ricky Whittle’s character Calvin Valentine is set to have a lasting impact on Hollyoaks. In fact, Hollyoaks series producer Paul Marquess told us as much earlier this week. Check out what the man at the helm of Hollyoaks had to say about the ‘Who shot Calvin?’ mystery.

Speaking of Ricky Whittle, the gent, who’s always seeking out a new challenge, is about to put his bod to the test yet again. This Sunday, fitness fanatic Ricky is set to run the London marathon in aid of Virgin Unite, a charity that raises money in order for vulnerable young people to improve their lives.

We spoke to Ricky today and he had this to say:

"Please help me raise money for a real great cause. I'm training hard and fingers crossed will make it over the finishing line!"

To donate, take a trip over here:

Also in London this Sunday are Hollie-Jay Bowes and Kent Riley. They’re guesting on BBC Radio One, so listen out!

Welcome to this week’s blog from the Hollyoaks music department.

This week’s Hollyoaks musical highlights:

‘Little Yellow Spider’ by Devendra Banhart –

A suitably retro- feeling track was required for this flashback scene of Ricky & his dad in happier times & this one seemed to fit the bill nicely.

‘Tribulations’ by LCD Soundsystem –

A melodic electro banger from this group of uber-trendy New Yorkers. Fronted by DFA Records head honcho James Murphy, the band were critically acclaimed in 2007 for their excellent ‘Sound of Silver’ album. They return on May 17th with new long-player “Something’s Happening” which is already streaming at various sites on-line.

‘About Face’ by Grizzly Bear –

A typically intricate offering from some equally-lauded folks from the Big Apple. Their latest album ‘Veckatimest’ may seem a little disorientating on first listen. But with perseverance the songs unravel into subtle harmonious gems  If that sounds too intimidating check out some of their many live performances captured on YouTube, for it is in the live arena where the song’s arrangements really come to life and the band showcase their abilities as talented multi-instrumentalists and stunning vocalists.

‘Paradise Circus’ by Massive Attack –

At their moody best once again. Fewer artists are requested more regularly by writers & directors than Massive attack, principally because their music works so well for atmospheric scenes. However this does mean we had pretty much exhausted the back catalogue so it was a real pleasure to have a new album of material to call upon this time round.

On our stereo this week:

Band of Horses – ‘Compliments’

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0GZlulEbaA

A great live TV performance of this track earlier in the week ahead of their new album ‘Infinite Arms’ (Out 17th May).

With a feel good 70’s rock vibe if this track is anything to go by it looks like we may be treated to a great album and a hot contender for the perfect soundtrack to the lazy hazy summer evenings ahead.

Duke Raoul – ‘Strange’

http://soundcloud.com/primecutmusic/sets/duke-raoul-strange-dead-echoes

Excellent debut single from this Brighton collective. Scuzzy and tuneful, the song possesses a powerful and mature sense of melancholy whilst at the same time being wholly uplifting and full of energy. A band to keep a close eye on in the future.

Order the track on a lovely limited edition 2-track  7” vinyl here...

There's been a bit of 'best man' talk in Hollyoaks this week. Those of you who have seen the Calvin 'flashforward' Hollyoaks episode will know that Malachy ends up being Calvin's bezzie - an odd choice at best!

It got us thinking, which Hollyoaks character would you have as your best man at your wedding and why?

Perhaps it would be Tony? He'd cook up a storm at the ceremony! Or what about Kris? His best man speech would go on and on and on! Maybe Rhys? Actually, on second thoughts, he'd probably try and sleep with your wife!

Image: Calvin lies dead

Hollyoaks series producer Paul Marquess got in touch with us before to talk EXCLUSIVELY about the episodes surrounding Calvin Valentine’s murder. He’s excited about them and, we tell you what, so are we! Read on to see what’s coming up on Hollyoaks…

“Hello,

I’m feeling excited and privileged. Why? Because I’ve just seen the week of episodes where we find out who shot Calvin.

It’s bold and daring stuff – full of mystery and intrigue. The week expands on what we saw in the Flash Forward episode and fills in all the gaps. As key motivations are explained, the finger of suspicion hovers over first one character, then another. It’s intense and absorbing stuff.

The aftermath of the murder is going to be every bit as dramatic. There’s a great big secret at the heart of Hollyoaks – how long before it starts to leak out? And, if poor old Carmel thinks that losing her husband is the worst of her troubles, she’s sorely mistaken. Instead, Calvin’s murder is the catalyst for the unravelling of a whole knot of secrets and lies.

The wedding week will usher in a new era for Hollyoaks – and subsequent weeks will see us introduce fresh characters and stories to intrigue and entertain you. I’m really enjoying what I’m seeing. I hope that you will agree.

Best,

Paul Marquess”

We can announce that following the phenomenal success of last year’s Hollyoaks Later, Channel 4 have commissioned a third series of the late night spin off. Woo hoo!

The E4 series, currently in pre-production, is due to air in October 2010 with five hour long episodes stripped across one week. This series will involve regular characters like Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe), Malachy (Glen Wallace), Michaela (Hollie–Jay Bowes), Theresa (Jorgie Porter) along with newcomers Riley (Rob Norbury), Seth (Miles Higson), Carl (Paul Opacic) and Mitzeee (Rachel Shenton).

Hollyoaks Series Producer Paul Marquess will take full creative control of the strand. Paul said, ‘'This commission is a huge vote of confidence in Hollyoaks from Channel 4. Seamlessly integrated with the 6.30 shows, Hollyoaks later 2010 will be the most exciting series so far. Prepare to be blown away...'’

Roberto Troni, Commissioning Editor for Channel 4 said, ”Hollyoaks is a hit with E4 audiences and we always look for opportunities to extend the brand and give fans something extra. The Hollyoaks Later spin-off provides a unique opportunity to experiment in a late night slot while staying true to the series. The late night storylines will be a cocktail of fun, glamour and grown-up drama."

What great news to start the week!

Hello Hollyoaks folks,

Welcome to the first blog from the Hollyoaks music department.

Each week we’ll be drawing attention to any interesting tracks that we’ve managed to get into the programme as well as enthusiastically babbling about some great songs that we’ve been listening to recently.

This week’s Hollyoaks musical highlights:

  • ‘Satin in a Coffin’ by Modest Mouse from the ace album “Good News For People Who Like Bad News” and Elbow’s cheeky Cover of ‘Independent Women’ on Tuesday.
  • A trip back to the old school on Wednesday with ‘Rip Her To Shreds’ by Blondie. It was nice to use a Blondie track other than ‘One Way or Another’ or ‘Atomic’ for a change. The song is a particular favourite of this episode’s writer and he was pleased to get it on the show. We did question it at first wondering if we should go with something a bit more up-to-date, but sometimes you just can't argue with the fact that it's an oldie but a goldie.
  • Electro popsters Pony Pony Run Run on Thursday.
  • And the consistently wonderful Mogwai on Friday, a band we use a lot on the ‘Oaks.

On our stereo this week:

Everything Everything - MY KZ, UR BF

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Di2U1UZ9J0I

Despite lacking titular vowels, this tune from the talented adopted Mancunians boasts a great melody and some strong, original ideas. It fizzles with wit and energy as well as packing in a killer chorus.  There’s a nifty Delphic remix doing the rounds as well so watch out for that.

The National – Terrible Love

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GdlsaQH6ao

A live preview from US TV of a great track from the band’s forthcoming fifth album “High Violet” It’s moody, magnificent and passionate. Their tracks can sound simple but are full of depth and intelligence. Like biting into a really meaty, satisfying, musical pie.

The National are one of my (James’) favourite bands, and I’d highly recommend buying their albums, particularly “Alligator” and “Boxer” and listening to them, loads, they will reward you in ways you may never have imagined.  Have managed to get them on Hollyoaks in the past, will try again in the future.

Watch out for some top tunes next week on the ‘Oaks from LCD Soundsystem, Grizzly Bear and a new track from Massive Attack.

If you want to know all of the tracks played on Hollyoaks in the last week then check out the music playlist.

Till next time!

As documented in our quiz, Josh's Downfall, Josh can seem to do no right at the moment.

Josh caused India to have a short stay in hospital, he went off the rails in Manchester and contracted an STD, he chucked Hayley out of his band for being disabled, Gilly lost his teeth because of him, and recently Josh has been swinging more punches than David Hay.

Now, considering the above evidence, would you forgive Josh?

Image: The Hollyoaks cast

Channel 4 screens are set to sizzle this summer as an influx of new characters set pulses racing in Hollyoaks Village!

A mix of familiar faces and hot new talent will ruffle more than a few feathers when they hit screens later this year.

The Costello family are glamour personified. Ex-Bill actress, Kim Tiddy heads up the family as mum Heidi, an ex-model who’s more than able to hold her own, whilst ex-footballer dad Carl (Paul Opacic) is an incurable ladies man. Eldest son Riley (Rob Norbury, Grange Hill) looks set to cause a stir amongst the ladies of Hollyoaks whilst younger brother Seth ( Miles Higson) is determined to step out of his brother’s shadow.

The Sharpes make a crash landing into Hollyoaks when mum Gabby (Phina Oruche, Footballer’s Wives) is quite literally knocked off her feet! Whilst making a desperate bid to escape her husband, Gabby is knocked down, only to be rescued by a Hollyoaks knight in shining armour. There is an obvious chemistry between Gabby and her new love-interest but as a mother of two children - Taylor (Shaun Blackstock) and Amber (Lydia Lloyd-Henry) - Gabby is forced to question if she can really leave her husband Phil (Andonis Anthony)?

Proving that brunettes do have more fun, Mitzeee’s (Rachel Shenton) arrival in Holyoaks creates instant drama. The wannabe glamour model is desperate for fame and fortune and whilst the boys in the village can’t help but fall in love with her, she has her sights set so much higher. Desperate to emulate Heidi’s perfect life, just what will she do to achieve it?

Alex Carter is also set to reprise his role as the irrepressible Lee Hunter. Back in the Village and signed up to HCC, Lee is determined to make a fresh start amongst old friends.

Hollyoaks producer Paul Marquess said, “We can’t wait for this huge new boost of energy exploding on screen. These exciting new characters join our fantastic core cast. Together they will ensure that 2010 will be a year to remember on Hollyoaks".

Earlier today we woke Kieron (Ste) up from a sleepy slumber to get some final words on the Dancing On Ice “journey” that saw him finish in third place. He had this to say to you lovely people:

“Sorry for pestering you about making you vote for me every week! I can’t believe we managed to get to the final and a lot of it’s not really down to me learning how to skate, it’s down to you voting and getting me through each week and I really appreciate it. I’m never going to forget the help you gave!”

Whilst we were yapping to Kieron, we couldn’t resist asking him how the much-hyped post-DOI Benidorm trip was…

“Benidorm was fantastic! It was hot, it was mental! Everyone was coming up to me and congratulating me and all my friends were there. I loved it!”

So there we have it! Kieron Richardson thanks you all. We promise never to speak of Dancing On Ice ever again… unless, of course, we happen to have another cast member in it next year.

Apparently there's a she-wolf in the closet - you'll also find a few Hollyoaks actresses in there because The Closet is the name of Claire Cooper (Jacqui McQueen), Jen Metcalfe (Mercedes McQueen) and Leah Hackett (Tina McQueen R.I.P)’s online boutique.

Last week the ladies celebrated the opening of The Closet by inviting such Hollyoaks cast members as Jorgie Porter (Theresa), Nathalie Emmanuel (Sasha) and Carley Stenson (Steph) to the launch. Ricky Whittle (Calvin), who filmed his last scenes that day, was also in attendance with tears in his eyes.

We’d also like to note that the lovely Zoe, who of course played the lovely Zoe, turned up to the shindig. Lovely.

Anyways, to see these fancifully frocked fitties gander at these photos !

We’ve also got another gallery on the go full of spoiler pictures from next week’s episodes. More importantly, it also contains a picture of a half-naked Gilly. Swoon!

Jorgie Porter (Theresa) might be up for a Brit next year too!

As we mentioned back in March, Jorgie, along with Nicole Barber-Lane (Myra), Alice Barlow (Rae), Dominique Jackson (Lauren), and Melissa Walton (Loretta), added their vocal prowess to a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s 1980s classic, ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’.  It's all for charity, of course!
