Image: Finn and Amber

Coming soon on Hollyoaks, we tackle the issues surrounding underage sex when Amber Sharpe and Finn O'Connor decide to have sex.  They're both facing difficult home situations that are changing their perceptions of sex and vulnerable, confused and angry with the world, they make the split second decision that will change their lives forever...

Amber will discover the reason her parents have separated is that her father has been having an affair and she's completely devastated that it's destroyed her family.  She wants to know why sex is so amazing and why her Dad would risk everything for what she thinks is just sex with another woman...  Meanwhile Finn feels rejected after his own mother abandoned him as a baby, and now the mother who raised him (Diane O'Connor) is suddenly desperate for a baby ‘of her own’. Finn wants to know why he’s no longer enough for the step-mum he loves so dearly.

Finn and Amber find comfort in sharing their problems with each other.  But when Amber decides she wants to experiment with sex and understand why adults think it’s so amazing, Finn finds himself engaging in something he’s just not ready for.

Both Amber and Finn immediately regret having sex. Amber makes Finn promise not to tell anyone and he’s relieved that they won’t be having sex again anytime soon.  But Amber is left devastated when she later discovers that she is pregnant! Both of them are then faced with the life-changing consequences of their actions…

We’ve teamed up with Channel 4 Education’s Battlefront series, ahead of this dramatic new story-line, to tackle the issues surrounding underage sex. The Battlefront project follows 12 young people on their mission to tackle various issues that face young people. Abbie Louise Davies’ campaign ‘Where is the Love’ caught the attention of Hollyoaks’ Producers as her message related to this forthcoming story-line.  Abbie Louise is campaigning to empower young people not to feel pressurised into having sex until they are ready.

In a special focus group held on the Hollyoaks set, Abbie Louise and other young people were given the opportunity to discuss their thoughts and opinions surrounding this difficult subject with the Hollyoaks writers and Hollyoaks cast, who shared their experiences and details of the forthcoming story-line. Watch what happened by playing the video below, or heading over to http://battlefront.co.uk/.

Producer Paul Marquess has said: “I am very proud that we are once again bringing to the forefront a subject for our young audience that many parents, politicians and schools struggle to address.  The story-line very clearly communicates that Amber and Finn were not emotionally or physically ready to engage in any sexual activity.  And make no mistake, there will be no fairy-tale ending for Amber; she is faced with the most difficult situation she could ever imagine.”

NTA Awards

It’s that time of year again. All over the country, finger-nails are being chewed to oblivion by nervous soap-stars hoping to bag a few accolades at this year’s  National Television Awards…

Even the beautifully manicured nails of our very own glamorous cast of stars haven’t escaped a good gnawing. That’s because we’ve got loads of nominations for different awards.

Who do you think deserves to take home the glory though? Emmett J Scanlan has been nominated for best newcomer, owing to his sometimes terrifying portrayal of Brendan Brady. For the category of Best Serial Drama Performance, categories include:

Jorgie Porter (Theresa McQueen)
Claire Cooper (Jacqui McQueen)
Bronagh Waugh (Cheryl Brady)
Andrew Moss (Rhys Ashworth)
Anthony Quinlan (Gilly Roach)
Kieron Richardson (Ste Hay)

Should Jorgie take the glory for her moving portrayal of a woman wronged? Or what about Anthony Quinlan, for his touching performance as a man dealing with the fact that the woman he loves has cancer?

How can we decide? All we know is that they’re all fab! We want your thoughts though. Let us know in the comments boxes below…

Drink Aware

Get watered, not slaughtered! That’s the message from Hollyoaks babes Claire Cooper and Gemma Merna, aka foxy sisters Jacqui McQueen and Carmel Valentine (formerly McQueen).

These girls know how to have a good time, boy howdie! Let your hair down, cut loose, sure, but why let it turn sour? That’s why the girls are fronting Drinkaware’s ‘Why Let Good Times Go Bad?’ campaign and encouraging young adults to drink water or soft drinks to space their alcoholic drinks on a night out.

Gemma Merna had these wise words:

“We all like a good night out but it’s never good to have that drink which tips you over the edge and ruins not only your night but the next day too. Believe me, I’ve learnt the hard way! Get watered, not slaughtered and don’t let the good times go bad.”

As well as encouraging young adults to drink water or soft drinks on a night out, the ‘Why Let Good Times Go Bad?’ campaign, which is run with more than 40 companies from across the drinks industry and Coca-Cola Great Britain, presents other smarter drinking tips including eating before drinking and looking after your mates.

Chris Sorek, Chief Executive of Drinkaware, says: “Drinking water or soft drinks on a night out is a simple thing to do but it can really help young adults stay in control of their drinking on a night out”.

Good thinking for sensible drinking says us…

Welcome to this week’s blog from the Hollyoaks music department.

This week’s Hollyoaks musical highlights:

‘Undercover Lover’ by Kids in Glass Houses – a surprising guest appearance on this track from the Welsh quintet, with the Saturday’s Frankie Sandford lending her vocal talents. Not the most obvious of fits at first glance, but Frankie’s voice blends well with frontman Aled Phillips to give us a catchy ditty with a big chorus.

‘Me and the Moon’ by The Drums – an instrumental version of this track created the perfect audible backdrop for the wedding preparations underway across the village, but an element of doubt tinged the air with both brides having second thoughts about their upcoming matrimony?

‘Over the Rainbow’ by little Tom & Judy Garland – in stark contrast to ear splitting version of Abba’s ‘Money Money Money’ we were (ahem) treated to at the Cinistair wedding earlier in the episode, it’s hankies at the ready for Tom’s rendition of ‘Over the Rainbow’ at the bittersweet wedding of our most romantic residents, Steph & Gilly. Tom’s vocals are blended seamlessly with all time classic version of the track by Judy Garland as the ceremony gets underway.

Check out all tunes played in our Hollyoaks playlist!

On our stereo this week:

‘Barbara Streisand (Pimpsoul & DJP remix)’ by Ducksauce – how do you make an already great dance track even better, do an immensely funky remix filled with killer drops of course! We are absolutely loving this track which is getting us right in the mood for hitting the dance floor this weekend. The cleverly edited video is not to be missed either, so check it out and we guarantee you’ll be dancing round your house before you know it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28nsnlg4Hb0

‘You Won’t Let Me Down Again’ by Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan – in a complete change of pace to the previous pick, this wonderful slice of Americana sees to the duo’s contrast of light/dark vocal stylings coming together in perfect harmony and to great affect once again. Just gorgeous.

Coming up in next week’s episodes, listen out for David Guetta, TC & The Egg.

Are those wedding bells in the distance? Or could that be the far less romantic din of time being called on Cindy’s gold-digging days? All we know is there’s going to be a ding-dong!

Cindy’s dreaming of a fairytale wedding before becoming more rich than she's ever dreamed of, but will millionaire Alistair Longford finally wake up and smell the deceit? But Cindy’s not the only one who’s short on time. Gilly needs to get his act together if he wants to wed Steph. But can he take her in sickness and in health?

And will Cindy get shopped before she can take home her past-his-sell-by date husband?! Should Gilly marry Steph even though she has little time left? Image: Charlotte

The lovely Charlotte Lau (played by Amy Yamazaki) left Hollyoaks village in Friday night’s episode after taking some cocaine that new student Doug had supplied her, falling off the archway, and paralysing her back! Charlotte was transferred to another hospital away from Chester, but sadly won’t be returning to HCC.

We called Amy (Charlotte) to find out what she’s been up to since she left Hollyoaks and hear about her favourite Hollyoaks moments…

So Amy, your character didn’t actually die when she left the show?

Oh no, she doesn’t die. Basically, she’s just paralysed her back in a very bad way, but it is a condition that can be cured sometimes apparently. But no, she doesn’t die, she just goes off to a specialist spinal unit to be closer to her parents.

Do you have a favourite storyline from your time on Hollyoaks?
Probably the whole Lydia storyline, which was one of the first ones I did when I started. I really enjoyed doing the scenes with Lydia when Charlotte found out that she’d killed Sarah. Charlotte had to keep it to herself because Lydia was emotionally blackmailing her. I really enjoyed the scenes from that period. It was challenging, but rewarding.

What are you up to at the moment?
I’ve just literally moved back to London only last week. I stayed in Liverpool so that I could see people and to do stuff in Liverpool that I’d never got the chance to do while I was actually living there. I’m still in the midst of unpacking at the moment, so I’ve not even looked into new jobs or anything yet!

Who, in particular, did you enjoy working with during your time on Hollyoaks?
I always enjoyed scenes with Beth Kingston (India), Elliot Langridge (Dave), Bianca Hendrickse-Spendlove (Texas) and Helen Russell-Clark (Jem), because I’m actually really good friends with them anyway! They’re all slowly gravitating back to London now too. It’s really nice that the friends I had at Hollyoaks are actually now all going to be in London, so I’ll get to see them all lots. I always enjoyed doing scenes with those guys, because we were playing friends and we were friends in real life too; that made it easy.

Any particularly fond memories of your time on the show?
There have been so many! It really flew by; I can’t believe it’s been a year! I think the best thing about it all was being able to spend time on set with people who are genuinely my friends. There aren’t any memories that stand out at the moment, because it was all good, I just had a consistently good time!

It’s squeaky bum time for the Osbornes. The credit crunch has finally hit Hollyoaks and one of our favourite families looks like they might end up homeless as Jack is struggling with his finances.

But will Darren save the day? We know he’s been involved in a few half-witted money-making schemes in the past and not all of his gambles have paid off.

Can the family afford to pay for Steph to get hitched? Should they sell up? What do you think the Osbornes should do?

Darren Day has joined Hollyoaks!

Image: Darren Day

West End star Darren Day has joined Hollyoaks! He is set to play new bad boy Danny Houston, who arrives in the village as Brendan Brady's best mate.  He is also the silent partner of Cheryl Brady’s nightclub Chez Chez, but it’s not long before Cheryl’s friends suspect that Danny's not the sort of man you would want to be in business with, as they realise his dealings are far from above board...

Danny’s arrival spells trouble for the residents of Hollyoaks, especially feisty Jacqui McQueen, who catches Danny’s eye.  Danny meets Jacqui when Brendan and Danny take her out for lunch and the chemistry between Danny and Jacqui is undeniable, much to the annoyance of Rhys Ashworth who also has a soft spot for Jacqui.  But Jacqui’s playing with fire when she flirts with Danny as she’s also dating Brendan.  But when Brendan leaves the village on business and Rhys fails to make a move, Jacqui is drawn to Danny’s charm, money and power - and a dangerous love affair begins...

Despite Danny showing his volatile and aggressive nature early in the relationship, Jacqui's determined to believe that Danny could be her meal ticket out of Hollyoaks and she embroils herself in Danny and Brendan’s shady world.

Danny Houston will appear on Hollyoaks from the week commencing 18th October and is set to make a shocking return later this year...

Producer Paul Marquess has said, “Danny Houston is a dangerous but very charming character who makes an aggressive impact in his first episodes.  Darren plays the part brilliantly and I’m delighted that we’re able to bring him back later this year.”

Meanwhile the man himself, Darren Day (who will play Danny Houston), told us: “I’ve really enjoyed filming with Hollyoaks and I’m excited about coming back.  Danny is the type of character any actor would kill to play and the part has been made even better as I’m working with great talent such as Claire, Emmett and Bronagh.  I’ve been a fan of the show for sometime and this is a very exciting time with the show’s recent reinvention.  I’m delighted to join the cast."

Welcome to this week’s blog from the Hollyoaks music department.

This week’s Hollyoaks musical highlights:

‘Can’t Choose’ by Naive New Beaters – Last week it was Laurent Garnier and now this week the Naive New Beaters. It seems that our Gallic brethren are ‘saveur du mois’ (that’s flavour of the month in French, see what I did there) around here at the mo with another track from a band hailing from across the channel being used on the show. The driving indie beats for this tune help to set the scene for our freshers settling into life in halls.

‘Suffocation’ by Crystal Castles – We teased you with a mere 17 seconds of this track and that 17 seconds was actually taken from the tail end of the song. The airy soundscape worked perfectly for Doug dreaming of a kiss with Tex but it’s worth doing the song justice and checking out the whole track, which is one of the strongest on the not-so imaginatively titled ‘Crystal Castles (II)’ album.

‘Just One Night’ and ‘Do Nothing’ performed live by The Cheek! – The undoubted musical highlight of the week was having the band perform a gig, just for us. Ok so it mightn’t have been your standard gig - they had to keep playing the same thing over and over because someone kept shouting cut - but still it was very exciting to have the band on set with us and what a great performance they gave.

Check out all tunes played in Hollyoaks this week in our Hollyoaks playlist!

On our stereo this week:

‘Louder’ by Katy B - A glorious tribute to youth and staying out past your bedtime.  Katy B shows how to make pop music in both an original and thoroughly modern way. She rap-sings her way through this track which contains influences from dubstep and garage but is as similarly restrained and streamlined as her debut single 'Katy On A Mission.' The bouncing melody during the line "darkness can't get me to sleep yet, I'm not that weak yet" is particularly enjoyable.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1Ynf2ScKiA

‘Veronica’s Veil’ by Fan Death - The Vancouver-based five-piece have just released their new album "Womb of Dreams" and this track is a particular stand-out. If you like 80s-influenced slinky disco-pop with catchy string samples then this is for you. It's sassy and packs a dancefloor-powered punch whilst still overflowing with melody.

Image: HCC Freshers 2010

This week freshers fever hit Hollyoaks!

The new class of the HCC (Hollyoaks Community College) includes Jamil, Doug, Leanne, Kevin and Lee... Darren and Jem have also signed up at the HCC, but we're familiar with them already... Anyways...

Jamil has immediately embraced life as a student, dressing up as a cow, chasing a lesbian and bedding India. However, some think he's hiding something...

Doug is another one who seems like he has a darker side. The American's already snogged Leanne and Jem, the sly dog.

Leanne came to the village with her fella (and Hollyoaks legend) Lee Hunter in tow. Keen to live up to the student archetype, Leanne snogged Doug behind Lee's back. Naughty.

Kevin Smith is Elliot's mate. He thinks he's an alien. That's right, he's a bit weird.

Then there's Lee, who, after a five year absence, is back in Hollyoaks. Despite now having Leanne as a girlfriend, Lee seems to have taken a fancy to Amy. Uh-oh.

So, which one is your favourite? Vote and let us know your thoughts in the comments box below...

Ste's Love Affair

Image: Ste

*Spoiler alert!*

This autumn in Holyoaks, bad boy turned good, Ste Hay is set to embark on a dangerous love affair with none other than Brendan Brady. Yeah! You better believe it!

When Brendan’s ex wife Eileen arrives in the Village desperate for money to pay for private treatment for their sick child, Ste realises that Brendan’s bad boy persona may just be an act. He realises that Brendan’s criminal activity is actually to fund his son’s treatment and Ste sees Brendan in a new light.

A wild boys’ night out leads to a drunken kiss when Ste feels the sparks fly between him and Brendan, but Brendan is disgusted and immediately rejects Ste’s advances. The following day, Ste can’t apologise enough for his actions. Brendan is surprisingly cool about the whole drama and promises to keep Ste’s secret. Later, Brendan makes a move on a very shocked Ste, but the passion is short lived when soon after their embrace, Brendan beats Ste badly.

Speaking of the storyline, Hollyoaks Series Producer Paul Marquess commented:

"This is a long running storyline and while it is dark to begin with the lessons that Ste learns are ultimately positive and life-affirming. This story is about not being afraid to be who you are and while this is something Brendan struggles with, Ste is refreshingly accepting of his feelings towards another man. I hope viewers will be glued throughout the twists and turns as we unravel how Brendan came to be the twisted person we have been watching on screen."

Kieron Richardson (Ste Hay), who came out on This Morning today, said:

"I was shocked to discover that Ste was to embark on a gay relationship, however, having understood the long-term storyline I am honoured and very excited to have been given this challenge. Brendan is a dangerous character and it will be interesting to see how Ste copes when he's the victim of domestic violence."

Emmett Scanlan (Hollyoaks’ new bad boy Brendan Brady) added:

"Brendan is a complex character and completely misunderstood. I’m glad he’s not a gratuitous soap villain, but a multi-layered character with depth, a troubled past and an unsure future. I hope that, as the storyline develops, viewers will be able to understand why Brendan has become the villain they see today. Brendan is compelled to manipulate and control everyone who crosses his path.  At the moment this makes him dangerous but when we identify why he behaves this way we will discover his vulnerabilities..."

Welcome to this week’s blog from the Hollyoaks music department.

This week’s Hollyoaks musical highlights:

‘Bourre Pif’ by Laurent Garnier – A suitably up-tempo drum and bass slice from the French Dj/Producer extraordinaire. In the featured scene, Brendan is working his wicked and wily ways on an unsuspecting Carmel whilst this hot and heavy beat shakes the booties of the non-speaking extras dancing the night away in Chez Chez.

‘Get Ready’ by The Temptations – Showing that we at the Hollyoaks Music Department appreciate a stone-cold classic as much as a shiny, sparkly new-un, this fantastic northern soul staple was chosen to soundtrack the parallel preening rituals of Rhys and Jacqui as they prepare to hit the town together.

‘Won’t Go Quietly’ by Example – With his debut album, Example has shown he knows how to craft sleek, lyrical, pop nuggets of synth-rap pleasure. The words of this little belter fitted perfectly with Tony and Gabby's blossoming relationship as well as working well with the inherent tension of Hollyoaks new favourite slaves to Cupid, Rhys and Jacqui (Racqui).

Check out all tunes played in our Hollyoaks playlist!

On our stereo this week:

‘White Doves’ by Young Empires – Ace, slowly building loveliness from the Canadian three-piece. A very powerful, hooky vocal combines crisply with a strong, clear beat to produce a huge, euphoric sound. Definitely a band to watch for the future.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKUoMJBnVJQ

‘Same Space’ by Klaxons - A portion of futuristic stomp rock from Klaxons new album 'Surfing the Void'. A strong, bounding beat and a typically poppy melody all underpinned by the wirey, messy fretwork of guitarist Simon Taylor-Davies combine to create a real crazy cracker. The album is dense and heavy, but still contains enough hooks to please those ‘Golden Skans’ fans who fancy something a little bit different.

Welcome to this week’s blog from the Hollyoaks music department.

This week’s Hollyoaks musical highlights:

‘Better Than Today’ by Kylie – another piece of pop perfection from the petite antipodean songstress. You can’t really go wrong with a bit of Kylie, especially when it accompanies some of our very own feisty females taking a stand against the trials and tribulations life has thrown at them in their own inimitable style.

‘Journey’ by Ian Britt – a beautiful track from a fantastic artist who we have been itching to get on the show for a while now. The warm tone of this track worked really well for the opening sequence where Cindy is struggling with her conflicted emotions towards Alistair & Gilly is upset about the news that Steph’s cancer is terminal and the impact it’s having on their relationship. Check out Ian’s Facebook page here:

http://senmusi.cc/bIDEoK

‘Winter Winds’ by Mumford & Sons – a nice underscore for some sage words of wisdom from our resident gold digger!

Check out all tunes played in our Hollyoaks playlist!

On our stereo this week:

‘I Walk’ by Sufjan Stevens – we were pretty excited to get our ears around this new track, a sneak preview from the forthcoming ‘The Age of Adz’ album. An interestingly synthie offering, we’re intrigued to know if this heralds the shape of things to come from the previously predominant purveyor of all things acoustic.

http://sufjanstevens.bandcamp.com/track/i-walked

‘Ghost Train’ by Summer Camp – A warm cuddle of loveliness for your ears managing somehow to strike the right balance of lazy hazy fuzziness without the saccharine sweet twee-ness  often associated with this brand of chillwave.

"I feel very excited and a little bit nervous, which I think is healthy. I can't wait for it start though. The show really suits me! It's high energy and a lot of fun too.

I've always wanted to be on stage, no matter where, with a live audience and instant reaction. If Hollyoaks was a live musical that'd be perfect!

I'll be sad to leave Hollyoaks. It will feel surreal, but I'm not going to say goodbye as I'll pop in as much as possible. I'm good friends with the people there, so I don't want to lose contact with them."
