Naomi's episode

Naomi's one clever lady. She had everything mapped out and everyone worked out. And then, stuff happened. Her teacher whom she trusted to do the right thing revealed he was just as lonely and unsure as everyone else when he tried to kiss her. Cook - the guy she had down as a complete and utter prick - ended up revealing his nicer side and when it came to election time, the students didn't want the better candidate. Things aren't black and white, and the biggest grey area of all proved to be her mother, who ended up providing her with the best advice when she needed it the most: that the people that make you happy are never the people you expect.

Naomi had three unlikely suitors in her episode. And unlike some of her more self confident contemporaries, this wasn't a good thing; because Naomi was confused and lonely and unsure of herself, and this came across in a wonderful way.

The scenes between Emily and Naomi were touching to watch - especially their love scene by the lake when they were scared and a little embarrassed. It made for a realistic portrayal of two inexperienced people who really care for each other.

We also loved seeing more of Emily, who proves just as quick with the wit as her sister, but with none of the bitchiness.

Then there's that final scene - Emily not wanting to open the door because her face was all puffy because she'd been crying; Naomi not wanting to deal with anything right away because she didn't want to face what that meant, but opeing up to Emily nontheless.

What did you think? Are we talking complete and utter tosh? And what's in store for Emily and Naomi now? Is it fair for Emily to have to wait for Naomi to accept who she is or has Naomi done enough?

UPDATE: afterellen.com described last night's episode thus:
"This was one of the best-developed and most honest depictions of a lesbian teenage relationship that I've ever seen on TV." Thanks to Hannah67276 for leaving a comment and drawing our attention to it.

The filming of Series 3 is well under way now. 3 months in and we're filming episodes 4 and 6 after a nice 2 week break, so everyone is feeling very bright eyed and bushy tailed.

We've been filming both Pandora’s and Naomi’s episodes.  These are both definitely my favourite episodes of series 3 so far.  It’s been great watching Pandora’s character develop and essentially grow up in her episode.  As for Naomi, she’s been more of a secondary character up until now and we all know there’s something going on with her & Emily.  This episode certainly moves that storyline forward.

I love episode 6 as Cook finally meets his match – in a girl!

we predict a riot

Trashing the school was a lot of fun and extras were great sports, the hair and beauty girls let rip and got completely covered in foam.  Jack (Cook) had a great time petrol bombing the car and it was probably the most hi-tech special effect we’ve had while filming Skins so it bought a bit of excitement to the day!

fire

I’m slightly concerned that like the Skins house parties that were replicated around the country after series 1, we will soon be reading in the papers about some school riot in Australia!

for sale

riot

filming the riot

The image of each candidate was very important.  Cook’s Che Guevara costume pays homage to Joe Strummer of the Clash and the youth cultures of days gone by.

cookie

His old school Dr Martin Brogues enhanced this, giving a nod to the Doc Martin wearing Skin Heads of the 1980’s. I hand made Cook and JJ’s rizzla rosettes.  We decided JJ would have knocked them up as Cook’s campaign leader. It only took 42 rizzla packets!!

Other than getting 100 extras to trash a school, the hardest part of this episode was down by the lake. To begin with there were two young actresses who had to do a lesbian sex scene and if that wasn’t tough enough for them we made them jump in a lake in October (just for the true Skins experience boot camp!)

jumping into the lake

The girls were stars and we did spend most the week singing Katy Perry’s 'I kissed a girl' to them.  The lake was apparently as cold as you’d imagine a lake to be in Autumn and after the girls were out it was my job to get them into a warm shower at the near by hotel.  Not as easy as it sounds when the shower breaks half way through!  It’s a really beautiful scene though and I think it’s been done just right, not too pervy. Naomi and Emily have got a great storyline going so watch to see how that goes.  Not smoothly, as you can probably guess!

Naomi's episode is almost upon us

That Naomi Campbell is a closed book. She has an answer for everything, and it's always wittier and cleverer than anything we could have come up with; except with hindsight, but that doesn't count.

Episode 6 - Naomi's episode, is almost upon us, and this time she can't disappear from the party early. Nah, we're with her for the full hour. We get to meet her mother, and see her at home in her rather unconventional family life. Though saying that, whose family life is conventional?!

Naomi and Emily

What we're most looking forward to is the fact that we get to see Naomi cry. Stick with us, that may sound harsh – but we actually get to understand her; and discover what makes her tick. The character of Naomi is a complex one (which, in real life we all are). She’s got everything worked out, and judges those books by their covers. She even knows who she is, and who she likes. Or does she? Naomi will face those she thought she had worked out on Thursday's episode, and she’ll be forced to re-evaluate those strong opinions of hers. But more importantly, she’ll have to confront herself and accept who she is. But to do that, she’ll have to do the bravest thing of all - be honest with herself.

We can't wait for Naomi's episode, because there's something real and ultimately endearing about her; and let's be honest, she hasn't taken up nearly enough of our screen time. The Emily/Naomi dynamic has been bubbling along nicely, and now there's an opportunity for some sort of resolution. Although we're sure there will be no happily ever after, whatever Naomi decides. Life (and Skins) is never that simple.

What are you hoping you'll see? One thing's for sure, we'll want to discuss straight away with you on Friday. We know by the comments that most of you are rooting for Emily and Naomi. Let's see if it pans out how you would expect.

Slumdog Millionaire won an amazing 8 Oscars last night - including Best Film and Best Director, so congratulations to Dev - who played the sexually desperate Anwar in series 1 and 2 and is now starring in Slumdog.

dev

Dev had no acting experience before Skins - he got the part in Skins by turning up to an open audition way back before series 1 had even begun. And now look at him: from Harrow to Skins to Hollywood. Mental. Here's an interview with Dev way back when, in the summer between series 1 and 2. Dev was interviewed at the Skins Secret Party. Bless.

Congratulations Dev

Floor runner Ben's episode 5 blog

So I’ve been told Javine is turning up for a days filming. She is to be one of the judges in our ‘Sexxbomb’ competition. Javine I’ve been informed is a pop singer of some sorts. So I think ‘Pop singer ay,’ probably used to being a bit spoilt, needs some pampering maybe. ‘Well!’ I think, ‘we at Skins are used to our celebs, I’m sure we can treat her to a standard she’ll approve of.’ Her car arrives, she’s chauffer driven, she looks fairly smart, shorter than I would of thought, but then again what did I know I’d never heard of her till ten minutes before.

‘Hello Javine I’m Ben, Third A.D pleasure to meet you, let me show you to your trailer.” All going rather well, we carry her bags put her in her trailer, the runners get her coffee, fetch her breakfast, fully pampered, the pope himself couldn’t complain.

Then it’s time to get her to the make up trailer where we leave her all happy and content sipping her fresh coffee. Clarice, one of our make up girls, then subtly calls me over. ‘Ah Ben I hate to tell you but, that’s not Javine!’
‘Pardon?’
‘That’s not Javine!’ my face falls in disbelief.
I whisper, ‘Then who the f*** is it?’
Clarice giggles ‘I have no idea!’
At this point I decide to confront our impostor who is happily and quietly sitting in the make up chair ready to be made beautiful, enjoying the celebrity status she looks so used to.
‘Excuse me,’ I ask rather gingerly, ‘are you Javine?’
‘Oh no!’ she replies quite matter of factly.
‘Right, then who are you?’ I enquire.
‘Well I’m one of your extras for today.’
You can imagine the scene; make up girls in hysterics, me looking rather foolish and this girl wondering what’s going on in a very confident manner. Then once the blood had returned to my head I asked why, when we had all been referring to her as Javine all morning, had she just gone along with it. To which she replies ‘Oh sorry I thought that was my stage name.’ At that point I think everyone in the vicinity was in hysterics.

on set

Episode five as you can imagine was hilarious to work on. The X-factor type game show ‘Search for a SexxBomb,’ is pure genius, just listen to lyrics of the songs they’ll have you in hysterics alone.

Rich Fulcher

Then having Richard Fulcher (Mighty Boosh) as one of the judges made this episode for me - the man is a comic legend. I’m proud to say that I am in one of the scenes with him. When Freddie and Karen are being interviewed in their living room, check out the boom operator ‘yours truly!’

Is Freddie ready to step up? This week's Skins...

Freddie's Skins journey has been pretty uneventful so far. Some might say he has been living in the shadow of his best friend Cook, and has spent most of the series keeping Cook out of trouble, rescuing JJ or lusting after Effy.

Freddie and family

With Freddie's episode we see life isn't just about cruising along on your skateboard (which for the record we think is a bloody brilliant way to live your life - imagine the money you would save on public transport) as we meet his family – including that ambitious fame hungry sister of his, Karen.

Will Freddie finally step up and step out of Cook’s shadow? Does he want to? And will he get the girl? That’s if the girl wants to be got anyway…

One thing’s for sure. Cook + Freddie + Effy just doesn’t compute. Something's got to give...

Effy's clothes

Please tell me what shop you get most or some of effy's clothes from as I love her style. Please put a page on here that says where to get all of her clothes from :) btw i love the new series x
xfoxy_foxx
Edward: Effy's clothes are from all over the place - a lot of her t-shirts/short dresses are from Kokon To Zai on Greek Street in Soho and Concrete on Marshall Street

Naomi's floral jackets

Where does Naomi get her jackets from .. the floral ones they're well cool . (Y) x
Melizzaa
Edward: Naomi's floral jackets are all vintage finds from market stalls and charity shop and the green one she wore in this episode was by Helmut Lang

Effy's leather jacket

i am absolutely in love with Effy's style in this sries of skins! especially this episode. so i would love to know where her maroon tshirt/tunic/dress is from? Aswell as her necklaces and bracelets in all episodes. Thanks so much! you are doing an awesome job! I would also like to know where Effy's leather jacket is from, sorry for lots of requests! x
rosey.flo
Edward:
See the answer to xfoxy, and Effy's leather jacket was from a dodgy leather shop in Bristol

Freddie's style

Why is luke's character 'freddie' always dressing so scruffly?
kadz128
Edward: Good question - basically because he's got other more important things on his mind. He's the kind of boy who lives to skate, and what's the point of getting dressed up all neat when you know you're going to take a fall or two.

Emily's top

Where is the top Emily is wearing in the scene where she meets Thomas from? Thanks!
liltlady1522
Edward:
Emily's skirt is from Motel - check their other fabulous stuff out at motelrocks.com

Edward's job

Hiya.I love the job that Edward has, I am currently choosing colleges for next september. I was wondering if you could tell be what courses Edwad took at college and university? Thanks alot! Madison
mads7
Edward:
It certainly is a fabulous job. I went a fairly non-standard way of getting here - I studied graphics, then ran my own fashion label, trained to be a tailor and then worked in theatre ! Not the most obvious way, but I think it illustrates how important experience in all areas of clothing is. There are dedicated costume courses at colleges which are great (Wimbledon is particularly highly regarded), but this might not be right for you. Good luck with your choice

Do the Skins cast give their input and what was the worst costume situation?

Hey Edward. I was just wondering if the cast of Skins give their own style input for their characters and what has been the worst costume situation (whether it was on set or off)? Thanks. Love Stefanie
ohstefie
Edward:
Yes the cast do have their own input into the clothes and it's a part of what makes this job so exciting. In most cases the outfits I design for them are very different to what they would normally choose but they trust me to dress them for the character.

The worst costume situation? Hmmm, well there's a scene coming up later in the series with an actor in the water and his wetsuit under his costume didn't do the job it was meant to do - that's all I'm saying !

Klariza's t shirt in the photoshoot

Where did you get Klariza Klayton's t-shirt in the photoshoot? kimberlylouise
Edward: Klariza's t-shirt was from TopShop

How has the style changed with the new cast? and does the new fashion trends of this year contribute to that?

How has the style changed with the new cast? and does the new fashion trends of this year contribute to that?
green_tissue_box
Edward:
The new cast style this year is very different to the original cast, because they are very different characters. When we started series one, no one was really wearing bright colours so we made our gang stand out by using a lot of colour. But now colour is everywhere so I have tried to knock it back a bit. But remember we film at least 6 months before the series is screened so I have to try to predict style trends or more interestingly create our own Skins style trends.

Last night's episode

Emily and Naomi finally got it on last night, and we couldn't be happier for the shyer twin. She's been hiding in her sister's shadow for too long. Naomi finally let her hair down and had some fun! She's so much nicer when she smiles. And then there's Effy and Pandora, who both grew up in last night's episode, as individuals and as best friends.

Pandora and Effy's friendship was always a little odd. Cute, infectiously upbeat and overtly enthusiastic Panda gave Effy a heart; but Effy never seemed to give much back; to a friend who idolised her and introduced herself as "useless", that must have been harsh. Last night their relationship took a knock and came out all the more stronger for it as Pandora finally told her how she felt.

Pandora came of age, not just because the Panda popped her cherry, but she finally stood up to Effy (something no-one does) and told her what was on her mind. And Effy? She started off the episode vulnerable and uncertain, for once she showed she needed a friend to be there for her. But Panda isn't perfect, and didn't get it, resulting in tears and toilets.

And then Effy turned to Freddie, but he had other people on his mind, he had come to rescue his best friend JJ (who we love more and more and can't wait for his episode); leaving the beautiful Effy Stonem alone. She finally learnt what it was like to be turned down. Good on you Freddie, though we still want you both to get together.

Our stand out favourite bits:

Pandora in Effy's kitchen, yapping away as Effy's dad was rendered speechless.
JJ in every scene, but especially when confronted with Pandora's mum and that kiss. We love him!
Pandora's mum, especially when she was getting down to some Bon Jovi. MDMazing.
Freddie rescuing JJ. Bromance!
And Pandora and Effy bonding after their fall out.

We don't want to think about Panda and Cook, it makes us queasy. Especially when Thomas returned. Things are never simple are they? What did you think? Agree/disagree? Let us know, we need to converse.

This block has been absolutely mental! Started off completely lost because I fell in a bush with Kaya (we have this problem where we look at each other, start laughing and kind of lose our sense of balance) and consequently my phone must have fallen out of my pocket, which wasn’t very good.

me and kaya

However...we’ve filmed my episode (along with Lily’s) this block (block 3) so I’ve been distracted from grieving for my phone. Looking back on it it’s been brilliant, at the time I didn’t really appreciate how wonderful it was, getting up early, then when I go home its too late to do anything but eat and sleep, but actually being so busy working with some of the loveliest (if that’s a word) people and spending 12 hours everyday in the loopy world of Pandora wearing wacky floral prints and bright yellow trainers is probably the most fun I’ve ever had.

The first week I was in Pandora’s house which has been decorated out like some toddlers birthday party, it really reminded me of my tea parties I used to have with me school mates. We didn’t have brownies with MDMA in though!

toperie

I felt I really got the chance to concentrate on Pandora’s story as there is an emotional shift for her in this episode, from really quite innocent and funny and to I think the point where she starts to grow up a bit and realise that not everything is as easy as baking cakes.

We also filmed the titles this block which is that bit at the beginning before the episode starts (you probably knew that) but I didn’t know what they were, I thought they were the names that were put up at the end of an episode. Bit of a Pandora moment there Lisa - bit of a moment. But it meant the whole cast came down. Fun times.
 filming titles

We filmed a bit in Dame Emily skate park and I realised I can jump on Freddie’s/ Luca’s skateboard and go quite fast down a hill - but I can’t stop the darn thing. Got a few bruises. Bugger.

Cook's trousers are classic Farahs, a fabulous fashion staple that has been around since the sixties

dempsie

Pandora's clothes are from all over - a mixture of High Street and second hand stuff, mixed up with her favourite Nike Liberty print dunks (not many of these were made and we were very lucky to get our hands on them)

MMA -KING

Like I said I can't remember exactly where I got Cook's polo, but try hunting something similair out in thrift shops/charity shops/jumble sales or your Granddad's wardrobe !

Dandy1

Cook's original Harrington is from an Army and Navy Surplus shop on the Cut in Waterloo, London - they are getting harder to find so keep your eyes peeled whenever you pass an army surplus or workwear shop.

skins-luver26

Naomi's dungaree skirt was by Motel ( motelrocks.com ), glad you liked the episode

JackHeart09

Freddie's shoes are grey canvas dunks and they were from last season'ss fall collection - but they didn't start out looking like that, we did some serious damage to them with and electric sander and magic markers !

Well, this week the twins mostly wore:

Emily - Green high waisted shorts by Motel, white polo shirt by Hummel, red cardigan by H & M and shoes from Kurt Geiger

Katie - vintage leopard print vest, vintage Betsy Johnson cardigan, fierce pencil skirt by Iron Fist with a  vintage leopard skin belt and killer heels by Lulu Guiness.

Effy's boots are by Sancho and were from the Camden Boot store - but look out for similair on the high street as a lot of people are doing biker boots this year .

Cook wears Converse All Star Hi black Mono boots and yes indeed he is rocking Farah slacks

Chocolate face

Effys dress started off life as a slightly more modest party dress by Tom Tailor, we hacked about 10 inches off the hem, chopped the sleeves off boiled it and dipdyed the hem - only then did it truly look like it belonged in Effy's wardrobe !

Wizard! Pandora's throwing a pyjama party

Skins loves a good party, and Pandora and her mum do too; except theirs involves jelly and ice cream and Twister, and it's a girls only affair.

wizard!

But Cookie's having none of that. And he's hatched a plan to become the honourary male at the party, whilst JJ is trying to learn to say no...

big brothers are watching you

A troubled Effy and troublemaker Katie have other ideas to Panda and her mum, and do bad things to the brownies they're making, and then; well, it all gets a bit 'Skins', as far as parties are concerned.

There's some girl on girl action, tears and tantrums, and most of the Bristol Rovers Reserves. And then there's some Twister. But not as Pandora first anticipated it...

And through it all, the two best friends who need each other more than ever aren't there for one another. If only they could sort things out before one of them does something they may regret tomorrow, which may change things forever.

Noooo! Just as we decided Thomas was our favourite, he had to go and leave again! What will we do? And more importantly, what will Pandora do?

We love that Thomas took on Johnny-Super-Charged-King-Pot-Noodle-White and won, something Cook could never manage, despite his appetite for destruction.

What warmed our cold, black heart was was seeing the gang rally round for someone they barely new. The Skins crew aren't just about parties and pills it seems, though they obviously like that too.

We hope he returns – for one, what will Panda do without him? We don't believe nice guys finish last. At least in Thomas's case, we hope that isn't true...

Laurence's blog - shooting Thomas's episode
Author

Date

Now this was a fun block to work on, mainly because we went to some wicked locations in Bristol which I never even knew existed and also because we had some great celebrity cast involved again. You will probably recognise some of the locations we use. Where Thomas is making a phone call to his mum is just off Redcliffe roundabout - the only difference is that we put a BT Phonebox on the pavement - it’s amazing what the Props and Art department at Skins have in their store room!!

The scene at the bus stop where Thomas is stuffing his face with doughnuts was hilarious to film just because poor Merv who plays Thomas had to keep stuffing doughnuts into his mouth as quickly as possible. Now these doughnuts had been made by Mitch from the art department and were covered in icing sugar, so were really sickly! In fact it took Mitch about 5 attempts at making doughnuts that didn’t make you wretch after eating them, so on Chris Clough’s (The Producer) instruction; myself, Jack Clough (Director of Skins ‘Behind The Scenes) and Ben Childs (Floor Runner) had to have a doughnut eating competition, I think I managed two before I was defeated! Basically the doughnuts were too big and the icing sugar too sweet! I can’t remember how many takes we did but when we were shooting the director Simon Massey kept shouting ‘More doughnuts Merv!! More More More!’ Poor old Merv did a great job and in fact we had a bucket standing by for him to be sick into after we had cut.

Another funny scene is with Thomas and Johnny White at the flat. Johnny is showing Thomas how tough he is by downing a Pot Noodle in one go then tossing it off the balcony of a top floor apartment block,  anyway we did this scene about 6 times so poor Lucy (another runner) had to pick up all the empties that had been thrown over the balcony!

The episode later moves to Pandora’s eccentric Aunt’s house where if you like your period dramas you will recognise it as the house used in Tess of the Durbyvilles. Our introduction to Pandora’s Auntie sees her swinging out of a tree with a chainsaw! We had all sorts of guys with us on this day setting up ropes and harnesses to achieve this scene. Even though the footage of the tree swinging is about 10 seconds it took all day to film. People often wonder why filming a TV series takes so long, well its because it takes so long to get one shot, you have to set up the cameras, get the cast through costume then make-up, then rehearse, then we ‘go for a take’ (this is when we actually film on the camera) then checking the make-up and costume, then checking the cameras then filming again, etc etc! During this period I tend to be standing by either the costume girls or the make up girls making sure they know what’s going on, then shouting TURNING very loudly so that all the crew know the cameras are rolling.

To me the best part of this block was the filming in the caves. The caves are located in Redcliffe so not far from the city centre, they were mined for sandstone which makes glass and not as most people thought for smuggling, although that’s a more exciting use for them!

the rave scene

Before the gang enter the caves they are in a car park discussing what they are going to do, Cook then opens a manhole cover and the music and light from the rave shines up, this manhole cover actually does lead down to the caves!! The caves themselves are huge and stretch back a long way, it was great fun to sneak up on the girls and give them a fright now and then! We had about 60 extras with us in the caves so trying to co-ordinate them is always good fun, because of continuity we have to get them to be in the exact position at all times.

keeping the extras in check

Oh, one more thing, the taxi driver who drops off the girls for the Rave Party is actually me!!! (but you have to look really carefully!)

So there you go, hope you enjoy the episode as much as I did working on it!!

We're glad you're enjoying our new style section. We like it too. We like that Edward, the guy responsible for the clothes and more importantly the style that gives each Skins character their own identity, writes for us. We like that you're already sitting up, reading what he as to say and even asking him questions, even though he's only written two articles so far.

We say: keep it up, because Edward is reading your questions and will be answering them each week at e4.com/skins. So please, go to the style section, choose the episode you want to discuss and leave a comment. He may just get back to you...

This year's Unseen Skins serve as an introduction to the gang before they meet for the first time, so you get to know them as they are, before they get to know each other.

So settle down for the final Unseen Skins and get to know everyone. Well almost everyone, Thomas you get to meet tomorrow.
