It's the penultimate gnomathon, so grit your teeth and get hunting - going into the un-Gnome
Play it nowWe've compared a few games to the Channel 4 gameshow Countdown in the past, but this time the resemblance is literally uncanny - as Sam explains, "You play with other people online to try and get the longest word" (after taking it in turns to choose 9 vowels or consonants - the main difference is that the time limit is 40 seconds rather than 30, and they haven't got the catchy theme tune with the "Peeow!" noise at the end).
Of course, you can't just make up any word you like - it has to be in the "official Anagrammatic Dictionary", which isn't perfect, and (for instance) disallowed "Storey" (a floor of a building) and "Preens" in our very first few games. The online element also makes it a bit less predictable, though there's sometimes a bit of a delay at the end of each round and, as Sam concludes, there's a downside when your opponent quits without warning "and you have to start all over again".
