Fights take a slightly atypical format. Your basic attacks are based on a low, middle and high option. You're given a split-second preview of each attack so that you can choose your block accordingly. Successful attacks build up stars which then translate to a hyper attack. This in turn can be countered if you have the relevant stars yourself. There are a good selection of foes to be vanquished, all with their relevant strengths and weaknesses.
