Rhys was killed in a catastrophic bus-crash on 13th November 2012 (on screen 15th Nov). It was the wedding day of two couples: Tony and Cindy Hutchinson and Ste Hay and Doug Carter. The couples shared a joint ceremony, but disaster struck when a mini-bus, driven by Maddie Morrison, came careering through the venue. Rhys died of a severed artery.
Rhys was the eldest son of the Ashworth family, who joined Hollyoaks Village in 2005. He had a string of romances that included school student Sarah Barnes, her mum Kathy, Mercedes Fisher, Hayley Ramsey, India Longford and many more. In 2007-8 he fell in love with Beth Clement, only to discover that she was actually his biological sister. Other notable stories for the Ashworth family included sister Hannah Ashworth’s anorexia problem.
One of Rhys’ biggest passions in life was music, particularly of the brit-pop ilk. Together with brother Josh, he formed pop-rock outfit ‘The Dirty Diegos’, who hit the heady heights of the Top 100 with their single ‘Play’. Not unlike another famous pair of gobby, swaggering, musical Mancunian brothers, when the Ashworths weren’t making music, they were sparring. Josh left the Village in 2010 after he was sent down for drink driving. What the court didn’t realise was that it was Rhys who spiked him.
Parents Neville and Suzanne were next to leave, setting off for Sunny Spain, not before Suzanne gave birth to Darren Osborne’s twins! Sister Hannah went to join them soon afterwards, leaving Rhys behind as the last Ashworth.
Aside from Hollyoaks, Andy has appeared in a number of stage and TV productions, including a spot on Coronation Street
