Haley comes from a big family, expanded by her friendship with surrogate brother Lucas. She and Lucas have been best friends since they were kids. When Lucas is allowed into the inner-sanctum of The Ravens, his jealous brother Nathan vows to ruin his chances and targets Haley in his plans. But when Haley won’t co-operate, Nathan falls in love with her, changing both of their lives forever.
Lucas is initially annoyed that Haley and Nathan are an item, but he’s stunned when he discovers that the two have secretly married. Nathan’s dominating father Dan is dead set against the marriage and this family schism causes Nathan to move out of the family home and into an apartment with Haley.
The young couple struggle against various hardships while trying to realise their personal dreams of basketball and music. Her dream of being a singer almost destroys the marriage, as she leaves Nathan to go on tour with successful rocker Chris. She soon returns to Tree Hill, but Nathan distrusts her and Haley starts to live with Brooke and becomes a Tree Hill High cheerleader.
Soon she and Nathan are reconciled and, despite trying to desperately hide the fact, she reveals she is pregnant. To make ends meet, she continues to work in Karen’s Café and helping out kids at school with tutoring. But her musical ambitions are finally realised when she records a song for Peyton’s breast cancer charity CD.
But trying to support Nathan’s basketball dreams while raising a son and still harbouring musical ambitions of her own means that Haley’s life is never going to be simple.
When we return to Tree Hill, Haley is acting as a wife and mother to Jamie as well as an English teacher at Tree Hill High, trying very hard to help a difficult student, Quentin, who bonds with Nathan and Jamie. She then supports Nathan's passion for basketball, and soothes Jamie's grief when Quentin is killed, playing a large part in his recovery.
