Two half brothers, Nathan and Lucas Scott, are both talented basketball players in the sport obsessed town of Tree Hill. But while Nathan enjoys the privileges of a stable family and education, Lucas was deserted by their father Dan and was raised by his mom Karen with help from Dan’s brother Keith.
Just like his dad, Nathan plays for the prestigious school team, The Ravens, while Lucas shoots hoops on the tatty riverside court. When an opportunity arises in the Ravens, it’s Keith who suggests Lucas to the Ravens' Coach, Whitey Durham. This soon leads to tension between Lucas and Nathan, as no brotherly love is shown.
Nathan, encouraged by his father, tries to make life difficult for his brother, especially since Lucas has developed an affection for his Nathan’s girlfriend Peyton Sawyer. Peyton dumps Nathan when she tires of his attitude and behaviour towards her and Lucas. To Nathan's surprise, he falls in love with Haley, Lucas’ best friend, although this relationship puts a strain on their friendship.
Lucas starts dating Peyton's best friend Brooke Davis but his feelings for Peyton resurface and they end up back together. But a pregnancy scare with Brooke, drive her and Lucas back together and Peyton is soon on her own.
Lucas is almost killed in a car accident caused by Keith’s drinking, an incident which ruins Keith’s relationship with Karen. Dan’s pressure on Nathan also puts a strain on his marriage and their son is caught between the two warring parents. An unusual friendship develops between the two boys’ mothers Deb and Karen.
As the series reaches a climax, Dan is coaching the team, as Whitney’s in hospital. The two boys unite against their father, but as their basketball season ends in failure, Lucas soon finds out that Nathan and Haley have not only slept together for the first time, but also secretly married. Meanwhile Dan discovers his wife having an affair with Keith and suffers a massive heart attack. Keith and Lucas both decide to leave town.
