Lucas and Keith return to Tree Hill when they learn of Dan’s heart attack. After his brush with death, and learning that Lucas has the same genetic disease that he suffers from, Dan decides he wants to get closer to his son and convinces him to move in. But Lucas soon finds out that Dan has paid a woman, Jules, to seduce Keith and then break his heart as revenge for Keith’s affair with his wife. Once this mission is accomplished, Keith leaves town.
Nathan and Haley’s marriage struggles as Nathan realises he slept with Haley’s sister many years before and Haley’s head is turned by a musician who convinces her to leave her new husband and hit the road with him. Distraught, Nathan crashes a car in a suicide attempt, but surviving this he decides to annul the marriage and get on with his life.
Peyton struggles with drugs, but is helped by her old flame Jake, a single dad. But the relationship comes to an end as Jake’s daughter is kidnapped by his former partner Nicki. Brooke gets closer to former beau Lucas, after her boyfriend Felix vandalises Lucas’ locker and is sent to military school as a result. Lucas begins to date Felix’s sister, but ends things when he realises he still has feelings for Brooke.
Dan forgives Deb for her affair and the two unite against their disapproval of Nathan’s marriage. Lucas discovers that Deb had a stint in rehab after a painkiller addiction. Karen starts to date a much younger man, Andy, who dislikes Dan intently. But Andy is soon forced to leave and look after his sick mother.
Before he leaves, Andy hands over a ledger which shows Dan’s illegal business activities. Lucas hands this over to Deb, and is promptly disowned by Dan for disloyalty and by Nathan for meddling in family business. Deb wants to take Nathan away to make a fresh start and the two move in together, but soon Haley arrives on the doorstep. Lucas tells Brooke how she feels about her, but she leaves for the summer without reply and soon he and Peyton find themselves alone at the beach together. Meanwhile, Dan discovers he’s been poisoned and a mysterious figure seems determined to kill him.
