Nathan survives the accident, believing that Keith helped him in some way and got him out of the water. Haley reveals she is pregnant. Brooke breaks up with Lucas, and moves in with troublemaker Rachel. She sets Brooke up with an older man, who turns out to be her teacher. The two girls steal test papers from school. When they’re found out, Rachel takes the blame, gets expelled and leaves Tree Hill.
Despite his heart condition, Lucas rejoins The Ravens. Nathan attempts to repay debts by deliberately losing a big Ravens game. But when the team wins, a loan shark attempts to kill Nathan, but ends up hitting Haley with his car. She’s rushed to hospital alongside Lucas, who has a heart attack during the game.
Nathan kills the loan shark in a rage, but Dan is jailed for the attack covering his son’s tracks. But he is soon released. But his troubles aren’t over as Lucas, while unconscious in hospital, dreams about Keith who tells him to think about the school shooting and soon Lucas grows suspicious about Keith’s death.
Karen, impressed by the lengths Dan went to helping Nathan, lets him back into her life. Deb overdoses on painkillers and moves in with Nathan and Haley so they can look after her. When a tape surfaces of Nathan and Brooke having sex, her chances of rekindling her friendship with Peyton are dashed. She tries to find Peyton to confront her, but finds she has been abducted by a stalker. The two girls escape together, bringing them closer together.
Lucas finds out that Dan killed Keith and plans to exact revenge. But before he can strike, Karen collapses and gives birth to a premature baby. The baby is fine, but Karen’s life is now in danger. Meanwhile Dan hands himself over to the police. Nathan admits to his attempts at cheating at the Raven’s game and loses the chance to go to college. But coach Whitey offers to look after him at his new job.
Nathan and Haley have a baby boy, making Lucas and Brooke the godparents. Dan is abandoned by his sons and Karen and tries to kill himself in prison. Lucas reveals he’s to be Whitey’s assistant coach at his new college, so he and Nathan will be together. Before Peyton and Brooke leave for LA together, everyone goes to the riverside basketball court and plays one last game together.
