Lieutenant James (Jim) Ron Dangle is the highest ranking deputy in the Washoe County Sheriff's Department. Dangle's father abandoned his family when he was a child, leaving him alone with his mother who eventually shot herself. Dangle then left to live with his Uncle Frederick.is former maitre d', and ex-member of the United States Coast Guard who had been previously stationed in Hawaii. Lt. Dangle was eventually discharged from the Coast Guard for reasons undisclosed, but was probably connected to swimwear in some way. He and is almost always seen wearing his trademark shorts, which he wears for 'mobility' and lobbied the higher authorities personally to be allowed to wear them.

Dangle seems to be a big fan of his colleague Jones, often going out of his way to hang about his usual haunts. He is occasionally overtly familiar and uncommonly agreeable to male suspects in his care. While overly attentive to the men inhis life, he can't hang on to a police bicycle to save his life, as his mode of transport is stolen or vandalized after leaving it briefly often. It is hinted that Deputy Travis Junior is responsible for some of these incidents.
