Perry Cox is from an Irish-American family and hails from Pittsburgh. His upbringing was not a happy one, with an alcoholic dad and a useless mom and a sister who is now a Christian. Perhaps this rather bleak childhood has something to do with his personality.
He has a tendency to be bitter, sarcastic and narcissistic with a cruel wit. He particularly likes to rant at and belittle the person he’s supposed to mentor – JD. For some reason JD seems to like this abuse and idolises Cox. He claims to be toughening the young doctor up for the rigours of hospital life. Cox himself seems to have mixed feelings about his calling. He considers the hospital a ‘dump’ but also schemes and plots to improve his standing at Sacred Heart. Formerly the senior attending physician he was briefly Residency Director for the hospital, but after Dr. Bob Kelso's departure, is the Interim Chief of Medicine. Despite his obvious skill, he has failed to rise to the medical heights due to his non-conformity and his refusal to accept help from others.
Cox maintains his physical fitness with a ferocious vigour and enjoys lounging about shirtless. He also likes beating younger hospital staff at various sporting ventures, despite his increasing age. He frequently wears various items of sports paraphernalia and seems to have a particular affection to the Detroit Red Wings. He can spectacularly fly off the handle and knows he has anger management problems. He also drinks to try and control his temper and stress levels.
As you may expect, Cox has various irrational figures of hatred including private practice physicians, Hugh Jackman, Christmas and Dane Cook.
