Elliot, a blonde bombshell of German descent, grew up privileged but under-appreciated. Her father was Chief of Medicine at a private hospital in Connecticut. Her mom was a drunk and a philanderer and constantly criticised young Elliot, especially on the subject of men. No wonder Ms Reid is somewhat neurotic, desperately trying to gain her Father’s attention while trying to keep her mother’s hands off her boyfriends.
The medical theme continues with Elliot’s four brothers, all of which are doctors and one of which is gay and once danced for Japanese businessmen. Elliot was closest to the family maid, Consuela, until her father deported her for messing up the cutlery drawer. Elliot attended Brown University and played tambourine in a Christian rock band in college.
The odd family and Christian overtones have provided Elliot with a list of neurosis that would make Freud cry. She has a tendency to embark on long pointless stories and puts her foot in it on regular occasions. She doesn’t like to be touched, is claustrophobic, a germophobe and even a ‘phobiaphobic’, which seems a bit extreme. She also has a thing about toilets – but that seems fair enough. She seems incapable about mentioning sexually bodily parts (a bit of a detriment for a doctor) and blames her slutty mom for her trouble with boys and bedroom things. Oh and she hates cats.
With all this medical DNA it is no wonder Elliot decided to become a doctor. At Sacred Heart she befriended, and occasionally became romantically involved with, JD. She began as an intern and later becomes a resident, serving briefly as Co-Chief Resident with JD. She briefly became a medical researcher, until her partner cures the illness they’re looking into almost immediately. She has a spell at a free clinic before becoming a private doctor, while clocking a few hours at Sacred Heart on the side.
Her bedside manner has often been considered cyborg-like, though she’s a technically proficient doctor. As the seasons progressed, Elliot became more assured, confident and sexy. She also has remarkable strength, especially in her fingers and thighs, despite being a bit scrawny.
