JD grew up in nowheresville, better known as Trotwood, Ohio. His dad Sam was an office supplies salesman, described by his son as ‘a bad one’. JD’s mother Barbara was left to raise the family alone when Sam flew the coup during JD’s 7th year. But he didn’t have to worry about missing a male role model, as Barb remarried an Elizabeth Taylor-tastic six times. No wonder he’s confused. He’s also got an under-achieving brother, Dan, who cops off with Elliot at one point, to annoy his brother further.
JD begins his Sacred Heart medical career as an intern, then becomes a resident and is now an attending physician in internal medicine. He serves as Chief Resident with Elliot for his fourth year at Sacred Heart and then takes a job as staff internist at the end, a post he still holds. Looking after the young doc is chief attending physician and professional grumpy guts Dr. Cox. Despite his fondness of treating JD like poo poo and calling him by a number of girls' names, he does occasionally show the slightest bit of pride in his young ward.
Though he is a ginormous goofball JD had proven himself as a competent doctor. He may not be as technically expert as Elliot it’s claimed he has good instincts and a decent bedside manner. He actually worries about his patients’ health, and go out of his way to ensure their recuperation. Though is more than a couple of things happen at once – bleeding then oozing then squirting – he can be in a bit of trouble.
Another thing that JD is proficient at is gawping off into space and having rather bizarre daydreams. These tend to be quite odd and quite long. He’s also uselessly clumsy, knows nothing about sports or politics or geography, once confusing New Zealand for New England. One skill he does possess is the ability to name films in which a particular actress got their kit off – which can be amusing after a couple of drinks but will never get him on Mastermind.
And then there’s the ladies. JD seems to meet and rifle through a number of them, including fellow medical types Elliot and Kim. But he seems to have commitment issues and often finds any bizarre excuse for giving them the elbow. Amongst other conquests are the gift shop girl, a coma wife, a psychiatrist, a lawyer and a drug-addicted social worker.
