The eldest medic at Sacred Heart, Bob followed in the footsteps of his doctor father, who was kindly to his patients, often accepting food and gifts rather than cash payments, but not so nice to his family, skipping out on them using Kelso’s bike, providing him with a hatred of bicycles ever since.
His military career led him to Vietnam, and also led to him having the name ‘Johnny’ tattooed on his buttocks – for reasons never revealed. Though we never see either of them – Kelso has had kids with two women, his wife Enid and a Vietnamese woman, Trong Tri. Enid is in a wheelchair, blind, obese and paralysed form the waist down. His son is a gay heavy metal fan, while his Vietnamese love child is kept secret. He’s been known to have a number of affairs and has something of an insatiable sexual appetite, which he enjoys talking about with his appalled colleagues.
He’s often seen as cold and calculating by other staff, as he puts the interests of the hospital before the interests of individual patients. He praises a bold decision, even if it is a wrong choice, though is quite happy to insult, and even physically attack, his colleague Dr. Cox. He also enjoys targeting Sacred Heart’s lawyer Ted Buckland, he he seems to dislike, and always picks one newbie to torture every year.
He’s a master at Ms Pacman and is happy to squander large amounts of the hospital budget on himself, for trips, boats and various luxury items. Despite this selfish behaviour, he bears a well-hidden compassion for those he looks after and works with. He keeps quiet, despite knowing about the hospital helping poor patients for free and even accepts that he allows Cox to win certain arguments for the good of the hospital.
