JD and Elliot are spending long hours working together, and it seems they are getting closer. During one of their busy nightshifts Elliot unexpectedly tries to kiss JD, and he is about to kiss her back when Dr Cox suddenly enters the room. As a result of this interruption, JD has only 48 hours to kiss Elliot, if he doesn’t they will have to enter the ‘Friends Zone’.
Way beyond the Friends Zone, Turk and Carla are completely crazy about each other, and the more they see of each other the less JD sees of his best friend. When Turk is allowed to close his first patient after an operation and thinks of nothing else, JD starts to miss him and feels Turk doesn’t have his back anymore.
Meanwhile Elliot is looking for trouble and on Dr Cox’s advice confronts Dr Kelso about calling her sweetheart. Having had enough trouble with JD coming to him all the time looking for a cookie or a hug, Elliot’s whining is the final straw so he sends her to the blah-blah-ologist.
Missing his buddy, JD accidentally gives Turk’s diabetic patient insulin and he starts to deteriorate. With things looking bad Turk discovers JD’s mistake and covers for him. When Carla tells him what happened he realises Turk really does have his back, and free from worrying JD remembers the countdown on the Friends Zone. With 30 seconds left on the clock he tries to kiss Elliot, but before he can pucker up time runs out leaving them stranded as just friends.
