Turk is still waiting for Carla to answer his marriage proposal. The wait is even more torturous because she’s been in Chicago with her family for the last five days. When Carla returns, Turk finally shows Carla the ring (which, unknowingly to Carla, had been lodged in a patient’s colon for a few days) and she still doesn’t have an answer for him.
Turk’s older brother Kevin arrives for a visit, and hoping to convince Carla that he really is ready for marriage, plans to use his brother as a selling point since he is such a dedicated family man. Turk gets a shock when he finds out that Kevin is getting a divorce. His wife left him, so he’s really depressed. A few nights later Turk and Kevin, joined by Rowdy the dog, go to a bar to drown their sorrows. They return home drunk where Carla is waiting for them, but she soon leaves when she sees a drunk Turk and the women from the bar in tow.
JD has been assigned to work with Dr. Townshend, a well-liked and respected doctor at Sacred Heart Hospital, who is also Dr. Kelso’s best friend. While examining a patient, Dr. Townshend asks JD to do a rather outdated and dangerous procedure when the doc knows that there are newer techniques available. JD performs the ‘old school’ technique and ends up slicing through an important artery. Dr. Townshend tells J.D. that he’ll cover for his mistake, even though the fault really lies with his less experienced colleague.
JD goes to Dr. Kelso to tell him the truth, but that gets him into even more trouble. A little later Dr. Kelso tests Dr. Townshend to see if he can perform a newer procedure and he fails. Dr. Kelso realises that his friend isn’t as competent as he should be and relieves Dr. Townshend of his duties at the hospital.
Meanwhile, Jordan is back at the hospital for her ultrasound. She and Dr. Cox disagree about wanting to know the sex of the baby – Jordan wants to be surprised and Dr. Cox wants to know if he’s getting a son or a daughter. Elliot comes into the room just as the sex of the baby is shown on the ultrasound screen. Dr. Cox sees her looking at the screen. Later, he orders Elliot to tell him the sex of the baby. Knowing that she has leverage on Dr. Cox, Elliot refuses. When Dr. Cox asks Elliot again, she tells him that it’s a girl. She also tells him that she put that information in a sealed envelope to Jordan. Jordan and Cox meet later on. Dr. Cox knows but hasn’t told Jordan. Jordan thinks about opening the note but still wants to be surprised. Ultimately they throw the envelope away.
