Elliot has been having a rough time emotionally and financially, since her father cut her off and is forced to give up her apartment. JD, Turk and Carla go over to her place to give her moral support, though JD appears insensitive to her situation.
To make matters worse, Elliot’s patient, Mr. Bragin, is suing her for malpractice because she misdiagnosed him with pancreatic cancer a year ago, telling him he only had eight months to live. He is bitter because he made amends with his family and has to live with the unwanted, newfound relationship.
At the hospital, Dr. Cox and J.D. are assessing a patient. Dr. Cox thinks he has cellulitis. Having watched a medical special on TV the night before, JD suggests that the patient may have a flesh-eating bacteria disease, which is commonly confused with cellulitis. In a rare moment, Dr. Cox’s diagnosis proves to be wrong and JD is right. The cocky intern revels a little too much in getting one over on Dr. Cox.
Later JD and Dr. Cox are each assigned two male patients with the same identical ailment. Dr. Cox decides to make this a contest of sorts, to see whose patient will get better. After sneaking a peek at Dr. Cox’s chart, JD is happy to see that they are both using the same course of treatment. He gets a big shock later on when Dr. Kelso informs him that his patient has died. JD checks with the pathologist to see what caused his death. Nothing turns up.
Carla is upset to see Dr. Cox back with Jordan and decides to tell him that he should re-think his decision to be with her. Dr. Cox, of course, doesn’t take this advice well and tells Jordan what Carla told him.
In her usual caustic way, Jordan gives Carla an earful of her opinion. After Jordan finishes her tirade, she doubles over in pain. The amniocentesis procedure she had earlier in the day triggered her premature labor. Feeling guilty for causing Jordan possible injury, Carla checks in to see how she is doing and from the doorway of the exam room, observes Jordan and Dr. Cox in a rare, tender moment. Carla realises that she doesn’t really know what happens in their private moments and later apologizes to her.
