After the staff have said their goodbyes to Nurse Roberts, they decide to adopt some of her lessons into their lives. Dr. Cox decides to reflect on his purpose in life; Elliot decides to speak frankly to Keith; and JD and Turk learn some important lessons in compassion.
The priest at the funeral suggests that all the staff take 20 minutes for themselves each day. Cox attempts to do this are repeatedly interrupted by interns and residents that need his help, testing his slender patience. Dr. Kelso points out that Cox loves the fact that everyone needs him, with which he agrees.
Keith tests Elliot by telling her that he wants to miss their anniversary to visit a friend. She fails the test by immediately agreeing to his departure. He tells Elliot that she doesn't care about the relationship and thinks they need a break. Carla later points out that Elliot has sabotaged all her relationships ever since she opened up to JD and subsequently had her heart broken. Elliot later tells Keith she loves him and they try to patch things up.
JD treats a deaf patient and discovers that The Janitor knows sign language. They are confused when the deaf patient's father, who is also deaf, refuses to allow his son to be implanted with a device that would let him hear. They eventually get the permission they need from his mother - but learn that their mutual deafness was the one thing that kept the father and son close.
Throughout the episode, Carla felt that the staff had been ignoring the lessons that Laverne's death had taught them - but realises eventually that she had touched them all.
