Ida Maria – See You Through
Norwegian Ida Maria takes us into Pandora's episode. She's on tour right now I’d recommend that you go see her.
Fat Segal – Teddy Bear’s Picnic (Pandora’s Ringtone)
In case you hadn’t worked it out, Fat Segal composed this polyphonic wonder of a ringtone. It’s the kids favourite 'Teddy Bears’ Picnic'.
Fat Segal – On Blue
Good old Fat Segal composed a lovely, little, piano-led piece for us here
Lil Wayne – A Milli – Danny Guillermo’s Ringtone
A running theme of the beginning of this episode seems to be ringtones deployed in a rather confusing fashion. Here as Danny walks towards the group his phone is ringing but he doesn’t even bother to pick up the phone!
My explanation of this would be that he is currently thinking about just what makes A Milli such an awesome track – there are some interesting points about it here.
Dr Dre – Next Episode
I have a DVD of David Axelrod live at the Royal Festival Hall and before he plays ‘The Edge’ he mentions how because of Dre’s sampling of it, he was finally able to go on tour. So here you go, David; a few more royalties coming your way thanks to Skins.
Fat Segal – On Blue
More from our good friend Fat Segal as we are taken into Pandora’s house.
Henry Mancini – Moon River
One of Mancini’s most famous pieces is playing on Pandora’s mum’s radio – you may also know Mancini’s work from Skins series 2 episode 4 (the Jacuzzi scene) or 'The Pink Panther'
London’s Burning
So the gist of this scene is Pandora thinks that the percussive elements of the kitchen utensils are making a melody not to dissimilar to the nursery rhyme London’s Burning. Fat Segal sorted out all of the percussion to this to create a piece of music which recalls Matmos’ 1998 album ‘Quasi Objects’ in its use of everyday sound sources to create a piece of music. Check you, Fat Segal; you’re coming a long way from your breakcore roots.
The Singing Kettle – One Finger One Thumb
Somewhere in the house, the Scottish kids’ show ‘The Singing Kettle’ is playing. You may have noticed but there’s a strong Scottish contingent in the Skins office including Chief Exec Bossman Bryan Elsley, script editor Neil Duncan and all round hero, Skins co-creator Jamie Brittain.
Nancy Sinatra – Sugar Town
Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood’s ‘Some Velvet Morning’ is one of my favourite songs ever. For quite a while it was in this episode but the inclusion of the awesome ‘Sugar Town’ is still more than OK for me.
There’s a Pump Audio track (library music) playing when the girls are sat in Pandora’s room and it is the only example of budget consideration in an episode that will make the Execs weep when they see how much it costs to include all of this music.
Kelis – Milkshake
Milkshake is arguably one of the last great tracks from The Neptunes. When I was in sixth form I wanted to be Pharrell Williams so much that I wore Trucker caps pretty much everyday. Now he’s gone kinda shit (did anyone else hear that awful wobbly-Dubstep production he did on Lil Wayne’s ‘Yes’?) but the 17 year old me still harbours a great fondness for him.
Britney Spears – If You Seek Amy
Britney’s not too subtle new single is playing in Pandora’s house. It’s yet another pretty good track from Britney.
Steely Dan – Do It Again
I have many failings as a Music Supervisor – my biggest two would be an appreciation of far too depressing music and a complete lack of knowledge of Dad-Rock. Skins’ Chris Lynd however prides himself on liking only MOR rock bands from the past so here he is with something on Steely Dan:
“Me and my girlfriend Hannah really like them as her parents played it to her as she was growing up, she thinks they make catchy tunes and the lyrics are funny.”
The MDMA causes some bizarre collective Bon Jovi singalong – I can’t explain it at all.
As the party properly kicks off the first tune we hear is Sugababes’ ‘Red Dress’, which is followed by The Saturdays’ ‘If This is Love’, Lily Allen’s ‘The Fear’ then plays as Naomi and Emily kiss then Girls Aloud’s ‘Jump’ finishes off the girl’s influence of music at the party. Then all of the footballers turn up...
Ice Cube – Giving Up The Nappy (dug out)
As the footballers turn up Ice Cube’s playing on one of their car stereos. The party then descends into a mess of Hip-Hop styles as it begins with favourites of teenage geeky indie boys Beastie Boys’ ‘Ch-ch check it out’ and the Go-Go classic DJ Kool’s Let Me Clear My Throat. Sex by N Dubz then gets a play before the awesome Numba 1 by Kardinal Offishall is heard when the party’s in full swing and Freddie arrives. Bizarrely Jay Z and Linkin Park’s Encore rounds off a party that must have had 5 or 6 people vying for control of the stereo.
Cat Power – Fool
We return to classic Skins territory with some Cat Power as Effy leaves the party.
Desiree Duvringe – Automation
This is the most prominent use of one of you guys actually getting your music on Skins – Desiree is an upcoming songwriter who is currently studying music in Stockholm. Read all about how she got her music on Skins, here
There’ll be more of your music throughout the series both in the real show and the Internet tings that Chris and Toby do.
Kanye West – Love Lockdown
Say what you will about autotune – whilst it divides seemingly everyone into two distinct pro and anti autotune camps – this is without a doubt its best use yet.
Low – Breaker
You may have guessed by now that we are all pretty huge fans of Low in the Skins office. This is from their Sub Pop released album Drums and Guns and is one of my favourite tracks by Low and their third use in the history of Skins.
