Fucked Up - Son the Father - Matador
Fucked Up, for me and surely loads of other fickle types, are the band that finally reignited the rather stale Hardcore scene. I was so impressed with their new album on Matador that I dug out some old Minor Threat albums for a nostalgic listen. Here the opening track to their new album 'The Chemistry of Common Life'.
Fat Segal - Freddie Theme
So Fat Segal and Burial aren't the same person, I always knew he was lying. Anyway here's the first of many tracks that he has specially composed for the series - a theme for Freddie. He'll be releasing some actual none Skins music in the very near future. When it is out you should buy it.
Fat Segal - Cook Theme
Fat Segal provides a theme for Cook that is clearly influenced by two of Jim Carey's best films - The Mask and Me, Myself and Irene - genius.
Asobi Seksu - Lions and Tigers - One Little Indian
I am a complete sucker for anything that references My Bloody Valentine - sometimes it's the downfall in my music taste (Tim Hecker's a bit wank when you think about it isn’t he?) but I can safely say without hesitation that Asobi Seksu are awesome. You'll kinda realise that as we go through the series as we use them A LOT.
Timothy Victor - Lady Belles
If you read my old series guides you would know who Julian Ronnie was and what he contributed to the show - well Tim is our new Julian Ronnie and you'll be hearing quite a bit from him throughout the series. You should check his band: out they're called Timothy Victor Folk Orchestra.
Beyonce - Ring the Alarm - Sony BMG
I've always wanted a waterproof CD player for when I'm having a shower. Katie's pretty lucky to have one and she's listening to arguably the best Beyonce single ever - I think it's way better than Crazy in Love.
Britney Spears- Womanizer - Sony BMG
Britney's comeback single was pretty awesome - for the first two minutes - then it kinda gets repetitive (not in a good way) and you just want the song to end. Here we use the track sparingly and it is pretty awesome.
Wu-Tang Clan - Shame on a Nigga - Sony
Enter the 36 Chambers is probably my favourite Hip-Hop album of all time - the only others that run it close are GZA's Liquid Swords and Clipse's Hell Hath No Fury. Here Katie's boyfriend plays us one of its tracks.
Method Man - Release Yo'Delf (Prodigy Remix) - Mercury Records
Wu Tang's Method Man (aka Cheese from The Wire) plays on Danny's stereo as he pulls into the school.
Eugene McGuinness - Monsters Under My Bed - Domino
Eugene McGuinness is an insanely talented and prolific songwriter who releases on Domino and the stand out track from his album 'The Early Learnings Of...' leads us into the college hall. There should be a 'webisode' somewhere featuring Eugene - you should check it out - undoubtedly it is awesome.
Timothy Victor - Roundview College
Back in series two Julian Ronnie wrote songs for dancing dogs and a musical about Osama Bin-Laden - here Tim writes his first eccentric song of the series - an ode to Roundview College.
Wilco - I'm The Man Who Loves You - Warner
Wilco really should have been in Skins by now. It's kinda surprising that we haven’t already had them in. My favourite song by them is called Radio Cure and I keep trying to get it into the show but to no avail.
Fat Segal - Freddie Theme
What else can I write about Fat Segal this week? Nothing besides he worked pretty hard on this episode.
Santogold - Shove it - Warner
If I tell you that I realise that any comparision between Santogold and M.I.A. is lazy journalism and quite possibly offensive does it make it OK? Here her second best track plays as Effy walks through the school corridors.
Fat Segal - Cook Theme
Fat Segal is probably sat there right now counting the royalties rolling in with all the work he's done on this episode, amazing.
Liquid Liquid - Optimo - Domino
Domino are being awesome on the reissues front at the moment, we've been treated to lovely repackagings of Josef K, Young Marble Giants, Robert Wyatt and perhaps most importantly an amazing 3LP + CD of rare Liquid Liquid material. Thank you Domino for that and for you lot out there here's Liquid Liquid’s most famous track.
Soeur Sourire - Mets Tons/ Dominique - Universal
We knew we needed something quirky for Pandora - I suggested something twee like Belle and Sebastian - thankfully Skins Chief Exec Bossman Bryan Elsley ignored my thoughts and instead plucked from sixties obscurity some fucking singing nuns from Belgium. Genius.
Fat Segal – Freddie theme/ Cook theme and Drums
More from Fat Segal.
Klaxons - Magick - Polydor
Here you go - after the huge reaction over MGMT's use in series 2 I've decided to let more mainstream indie music in the show without kicking up too much of a fuss and throwing a tantrum in the Skins office. It works pretty well dunnit?
Asobi Seksu - Nefi and Girly - One Little Indian
I told you you'd be hearing more Asobi didn't I? So far in Skins we've been using tracks from their 'Citrus' album - they also have a new one out called Hush, which should get played a bit towards the end of series three. Here-s hoping
