Creedence Clearwater Revival - Run Through the Jungle.
I’m certain you all know about this classic band and if not, go get into them because they have so many belting tunes that people haven’t really heard. This was a selection from the big dog, Bryan Elsley himself and I was brought up on this shit, along with Bruce Springsteen and Marty Robbins. It’s the opening track as we follow Thomas running.
Tyondai Braxton -Opening Bell.
Tyondai Braxton is the guitarist from Battles, who are awesome. The stuff from his solo project is excellent as well; in no way is it better than Battles, but it is a worthy attempt. This is the song playing as Pandora makes her way over to Effy's room which is appropriate as the first time I heard this track, it reminded me of Pandora.
Pandora - Don’t Be Down.
This song makes my heart smile. The instrument (called a Tenori-On) is Jamie Brittain’s and he has left it in the office - it’s the most addictive thing in the whole world. This was written and recorded by Timothy Victor.
Colour Music - You Can Call Me By My Name.
This lot are a fun band. I quite like the poppy element this tune has; it’s not a track that will change your life, but it is fun. This is playing at Naomi’s house when Arcia is having a shit.
Segal - Boundless.
This piece from Segal is really dark and it works really well here, especially now we know that John Foster is fucking mental.
Micachu - Curly Teeth.
Clearly I’m a big fan of this album, so go get it. This comes in as quick as it goes out - straight after the Segal cue.
Panda Su - Eric is Dead.
Neil Duncan (Script Editor) gave me the heads up on Panda Su not that long ago. We’d locked the last episode pretty much and there weren’t really any music places left in the series. When I heard this song though, I thought that it was ace and we needed it in an episode (we had to lose a track for this). This song is proper Skins music and will be big news in the near future. The track comes in as Karen is plucking up the courage to go into Naomi’s house.
The Sisters of Transistors -The Don.
The Sisters of Transistors are a small Manchester band of whom the Butcher is a big fan and they make some of the girliest music around. This is the tune played when Katie and Pandora are on the bus.
My Toy Likes Me -Skylights.
These guys make really eccentric electronic music and it’s all produced with 40 year old equipment to obtain this unusual sound. The track works really well in the scene where Cook realises he has been boshing an Effy look-a-like.
Segal - Oderson.
Again, a beautiful score by Segal, as Cook breaks down in tears.
Aha - Take On Me.
I don’t reckon this tune needs too much of an explanation - Naomi’s fucked, dancing around and being a wanker.
Wham! - Everything She Wants.
This is the best Wham! tune in the world, ever and it’s another tune which Naomi is being inappropriate to. I caught the Butcher crying to this song once - it was awkward…
Dirty Epics - We’re Coming Up.
This track came from Daniel O’Hara, who directed the episode. Dirty Epics are a band from Dublin and the song works well as the police storm the house looking for Cook.
Jonsi & Alex - Stokkseyri.
This is the side project of Jón Þór Birgisson, the lead singer from Sigur Ros. The Butcher gets bullied a lot at Skins for his love of Sigur Ros and, before I started, there was some sort of incident where Butch filled all his episodes full of Sigur Ros - they are actually banned from the office now. I felt bad for the Butcher and I slipped him this one in on the sly. This is the track which comes in as Cook comes into Freddie’s shed.
Giselle - Small People.
This is from the music you all sent in for Skins 4. Giselle is fantastic, I have every faith she’s going be big and it was by far the best thing I heard. This track comes in straight after Pandora tells Effy she’s going to Harvard and follows Karen to the shed.
Kylie Minogue -Can’t get you out of my head.
This is an amazing pop tune. It’s the song which Cook, Karen and JJ dance to - such a funny scene.
Buck 65 - Lipstick.
I don’t like this song, but that’s what we needed here - a shit song that represented a shit party - which it does brilliantly.
The Ettes - Take it with you.
This is an ace tune and after Naomi does her epic speech we hear this coming in as everyone starts getting on it. This Nashville based band have some top tunes.
The Count and Sinden - Strange Things.
This collaboration by two top producers is unreal. The tune is incredible and I listen to it before going out all the time. It’s playing in the shed when Cook sets off following John Foster.
Port O’Brien - Leap Year.
This is one of the nicest songs on Skins this year, I think. The chorus is ‘I will not forgive you but I might turn a blind eye’ - fairly appropriate for Thomas and Pandora I reckon. This is the penultimate track as Thomas tells Pandora he’s going to Harvard
Nice Nice - Set the Setting.
This noise track is from Nice Nice and they are one of my favourite finds this year. They are a new signing to Warp and their debut album is insane. This track was deliberated for so long as I had so many ideas running through my head and it was discussed heavily. This got decided upon and then changed and it wasn’t until the very last minute, at 10:30, when we were mixing the last episode that it got changed back to this tune, which I think is brilliant. This probably isn’t what you’d expect from a final track of the second generation of Skins, but neither was the ending I assume - what an ending though!
