Lana was Clark’s neighbour during childhood and he was always smitten with her. She’s the typical ‘girl next door’, beautiful, kind and unattainable. She’s always felt something was missing from her life due to the death of her parents and is drawn to the other local outsider: Clark. During High School, the two cement their friendship, with her as a popular cheerleader dating star quarterback Whitney Fordman. But Clark discovers that he cannot get near to her without getting sick and eventually realises its because of the Kryptonite necklace she wears.
As they get older Lana grows closer to Clark. She moves in with Clark’s friend Chloe as they complete High School. Lana and Clark slowly try and start a romantic relationship, but fear backlash from Chloe because of her personal feelings for her friend. Just as the two seem to be on the verge of a real romance, Clark unexpectedly runs away to Metropolis and on his return the two rethink their relationship. Lana eventually begins to date Adam Knight, a guy she met while in physical therapy after an accident. But the relationship turns out to be a ploy to get closer to Lana, so that Adam can investigate Clark.
To get over these traumas, Lana applies to study in Paris and begins a romantic relationship with Jason Teague. She returns to Smallville after receiving a mysterious tattoo, which resembles a symbol on the Kawatche cave walls. The tattoo acts as a vessel for the spirit of Countess Margaret Isobel Theroux who inhabits Lana’s body and forces her to find the three stones of knowledge. She later witnesses the landing of an alien spacecraft, and two beings killing everyone in sight. Both she and Lex become fascinated with this spaceship and when her relationship with Clark dissolves she begins to grow closer to Lex.
Lex eventually tricks Lana into marrying him. When the deceit is revealed, Lana terminates the marriage, fakes her own death and attempts to pin her supposed murder on her new husband. Lana also discovers the truth behind Clark’s identity and realises why he’s been so mysterious all these years. With Clark’s secret no longer an issue, the two attempt to start a relationship. But Lana’s obsession with Lex affects her and Clark’s love life. Eventually, Lana realises that, even though she loves Clark, the only way to help him would be if she left Smallville forever.
