Lex, the son of billionaire Lionel Luthor, who was originally sent to the town of Smallville to run the local fertilizer plant. After Clark saves his life in a car accident, the two became friends, but Lex soon becomes fascinated by his new friend and his unusual abilities. It is this fascination that turns Lex from a friend to Clark’s chief adversary.
Early on Lex hires a reporter to discover how he survived the automobile accident where Clark saved him. The reporter is ultimately killed by Jonathan who wants to protect his son’s secrets. Lex also enlists the help of Dr. Hamilton to study the effects of the mysterious meteor rocks. Lex slowly gathers more information about Clark including the Kawatche Caves that contain symbols on the cave walls. His interest grows more and more when he finds Clark constantly in the caves, and the fact that Clark seems to be able to understand this strange language. But Clark eventually tires of Lex’s intrusion in his life and when Lex’s father Lionel reveals the extent of his son’s research into him, their relationship is over. Soon Lex is in pursuit of a number of ancient stones, linked to Clark’s powers and uncovering the mysterious Veritas, which his father is a part of. This leads Lex to discover the Fortress of Solitude and an ultimate showdown with his former friend.
Lex has a highly turbulent relationship with his father Lionel, who sees his son as weak and tries to test him on a regular basis. More brutal and ruthless then his son, Lex constantly battles with Lionel, who also takes an interest in Clark and the Kawatch caves. This joint interest into the mysteries of Krypton soon has the two locked in a deadly conflict.
Lex has similar relationship trouble with the women in his life. He started a relationship with Victoria Hardwick, who was attempting to use him to purchase LuthorCorp. He’s also been married three times, during the course of the show. First, he married Desiree Atkins, who used her meteor-created powers to seduce Lex into marriage so that she could steal his money. Later Lex met and married Dr. Helen Bryce who would try and kill him on their honeymoon. Eventually Lex hooked up with Clark’s beloved Lana Lang after deceiving her into believing that she was pregnant with his child. Upon learning the truth, Lana faked her own death and attempted to pin the murder on him.
