Clark has to deal with the impact of the second meteor shower on Smallville and the havoc that it causes. Chloe is transported to the Arctic Circle and Kryptonian supervillains appear in Smallville. Clark is in the Fortress of Solitude meeting Jor-El who convinces him to give up his powers, but to get them back will cost him the life of someone he loves.
The characters are growing up and many Smallvillians are off to college. Clark and Lana finally stop their on-off relationship and become an official couple. The other girls in Clark's life suddenly become surplus to requirements, so Chloe reveals the secret she's been keeping from him.
Meanwhile the Luthor family are undergoing some changes. Lionel has recovered from a catatonic state where he was sketching Kryptonian symbols on the wall and is now dedicated to reforming his life. Lex begins to show a darker side developing into the villain we all know he will be. The Luthors and their business affairs are under investigation by one of Clark’s college professors, Milton Fine. In fact Milton is not human but a Kryptonian determined to turn Lex into a minion of General Zod, Krypton’s worse criminal imprisoned in the Phantom Zone. Lex decides on a life of power and starts a political career, though a fanatical supporter turns the race into a literal one for life and death.
As the series ends – Lex and Lana grow closer as the earth is threatened by a computer virus which could cause utter pandemonium. It’s up to Clark to save the world, but he must destroy someone to achieve this goal.
