The cow is back, and Edinburgh bound!
The excitement of the Edinburgh Fringe 2011 is upon us. Underbelly and E4 Udderbelly's Pasture is open.
2011 highlights include the world's first parkour, acrobatics and martial arts theatre show Free Run and the return to Edinburgh of the inimitable couple The Hamiltons. Ruby Wax performs her critically acclaimed play Losing It in E4 Udderbelly, and Richard Herring will fill E4 Cowbarn will his critic's choice brand of comedy.
After an incredible 2011, with record breaking sales and critical acclaim, the unmooo'stakable shadow of the giant up-turned purple cow will once again reign over the festival city as the E4 Udderbelly crosses the border after a hugely successful extended run at the South Bank in London.
There is something for everyone in this year’s Underbelly programme, from the multi-voiced talent that is Michael Winslow (Police Academy) to the first festival appearance by America's funniest and most unpredictable man on MTV, Mr Tom Green. Ruby Wax returns with her critically acclaimed new show Losing It! Ruby's last full run in the festival was in 1986 and we are delighted that she has chosen the Pasture as her home for August.
The world’s first parkour show, Free Run, will be performing nightly in the E4 Udderbelly. A multimedia extravaganza of urban acrobatics which is one of the most exciting and dangerous extreme sports. The live stage show is currently taking London by storm. From Free Run to the UK’s Hottest Dance Act and the winners of The Forth One 2010 Best Fringe Performance Award Winners, Flawless. Following on from a record breaking 2010 festival debut, an 80 date national tour, and two London seasons, they are returning to the fringe with an all new show (produced by Underbelly at The Pleasance Grand).
We have scoured the international pastures to bring some truly ground-breaking new work to Edinburgh this year including the international multi-award winning Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer and the stars of the 2011 World Cup opening ceremony, Soweto Entsha. We have expanded our farm once again this year with two exciting new spaces in Bristo Square (the Dairy Room and The Wee cow) while Underbelly Cowgate continues to provide a hot-bed of new theatre and alternative comedy. This is also the first year of the Underbelly Edinburgh Award which has been created in order to allow one outstanding show from this year’s Adelaide Fringe to come to our Fringe Festival and showcase their work. This year’s recipient is Lounge Room Confabulators..... an amazing piece of theatre which you can book to have performed in your own home.
We are also delighted to welcome back Fringe favourites Frisky and Mannish, Barry and Stuart and Fringe veteran Richard Herring. New additions to our herd this year include Scotland's funniest man Craig Hill and them crazy Hamilton’s, back with their ever-popular lunchtime chat show. A day at Underbelly Cowgate wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the debauched, no holds barred late night comedy extravaganza that is the fringe legend SPANK! Featuring the best acts that the fringe has to offer ....what a way to end a day out at Underbelly.
